The Role
Very good experience; large exposure to Credit Risk and Risk Management in the financial sector. Technical concepts interesting but not based on career path.
All colleagues were very friendly and helpful at all time. Whilst surrounded by very experienced IBMers I was able to develop upon given skills and knowledge, making me more efficient in my role.
All support and guidance was available; whether in the office or on project.
Usually busy however a very short period of no little amount of tasks was experienced which slowed down personal development opportunities whilst on placement.
Depending on experience: you start with tasks that are less important to ones that are noticeable in the company. Worked on very important product modification related tasks with a major Austrian and German bank - under tight deadlines. Modeled interest rate swaps in order to uphold positive client relationships with a Dutch Bank. Part of the credit implementation team dealing with regulatory parameters on site at HSBC UK (after 11 months of experience).
Exposure to risk management has been an eye-opening experience whilst gaining insight on how financial institutions and regulators work in the banking sector. This has had an effect on my dissertation topic for my BSc in Economics. Also you develop a number of transferable skills: communication, time management, teamwork, analysis and leadership.
The Company
Fair - however it lacked young people.
Organisation of placement was ok as we were the first students at the Canary Wharf offices.
Full orientation of financial regulations provided by the BCBS; Basel II and Basel III, how the financial sector works and a number of technical skills. I was also able to master the IBM RiskWatch Software and functionally master the Algorithmics Credit Manager software. Training and development ensured.

The Culture
Canary Wharf offices only consisted of 3 students in total.
Canary Wharf and London are very expensive overall. I was fortunate enough to live at home hence managed to enjoy myself whilst on placement.
London nightlife is very good however did not participate with colleagues.
Reading tutoring at a local primary school, also other opportunities through IBM Givebacks.
