The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I was given an insight into various strands of tax: employers solutions, VAT, corporate tax and research and development tax. I also had the opportunity to sit in client meetings and conference calls, which was really interesting. It's great to have an insight into how Grant Thornton build their client relationships, and learn more about the firm.
All my colleagues trusted me to carry out tasks. I was able to attend client meetings and conference calls so I felt they trusted me in front of clients. I loveed it how partners to associate level are all integrated in the office as you feel that everyone is working together as a team, and everyone's ideas are valid.
I could ask anyone for help, and know that they would give me their full support. Despite everyone being so busy, they always had time to help me.
I started most of my days knowing some of the tasks I would be working on that day, and I was given other tasks throughout the day. At the start of my internship I also got to choose what projects I wanted to be involved with. These projects were for all interns across the UK, so it was a great way to collaborate with all the interns. Any time I had spare time I could work on these projects. All interns were also given a title for our final presentation at the start, so I could also work on this.
Most of the tasks I was given I was given the responsiblity to complete them myself, and then I would send them to be reviewed. This is a really good method, as you learn from your mistakes this way.
During my internship I attended a two day presentation workshop, which will definitely be beneficial to my final year at univeristy as I have presentation assignments. The workshop informed me on effective techniques on how to engage your audience; I also had the opportunity to present a few times and I was given feedback, which was great as I now know what I am doing well and what I can improve on.
The Company
There was a real friendly buzz in the office. It was clear that everyone supported each other. I like it how people work as a connected network rather than just independent.
I always had work to do, and knew what I would be working on next, so I'd say it was well organised.
I had many training sessions to learn how to use all the software, and whenever I was given a task that I had not done before everyone was really supportive and would guide me through it. I also went to a two day presentation workshop, which was brilliant.
Company Parties/Events
The promotion prospects are great, people tend to move up quickly based on their performance.
The Culture
We all clicked as an intern group, so we went often go out together. There were also lots of events at Grant Thornton, so it was good to get to know more people in the office that way.
I stayed at home during my internship, so for me the cost of living really was as "cheap as chips". However, most people say that the cost of living is not Socialising in Glasgow is relatively cheap compared to other cities.
Glasgow has got a lot of character! I love the nightlife: good bars, clubs and restaurants.
Most definitely! I was invited to events practically every day. We went to the races, there were celebrations for exam success, pub quizs, and many more...
