About You
I really enjoyed the experience and was able to gain insight from all the departments in the company.
The team at Michael O'Mara were incredibly welcoming and friendly.
I was able to speak to a variety of people within the company from various departments who gave me one-to-one advice about the work involved in those departments and how to achieve one of those roles.
The experience was invaluable for gaining a career in publishing as I was able to complete tasks that might not have been possible in a larger company. For instance, assisting with the editing of manuscripts and providing ideas for upcoming book publications.
The Company
Whilst there was no official structure, I was given a sufficient amount of tasks to do and was able to prioritise them accordingly. When I had completed them I was able to request new tasks accordingly to my career interests.
The team were very friendly and upbeat which resulted in a vibrant and fun atmosphere.
As my work placement was only for 2 weeks, the company did not have an opportunity to properly invest in me. However, I was taught how to use programs such as Biblio.
From speaking to employees throughout the company I gained a good idea of what a full time role would be like with the company.
I was able to get a good grasp of the company culture.
My work experience confirmed my aspirations to work in publishing.
Everything Else
I was allowed up to £70 worth of travel expenses.
I was able to meet with employees by emailing them beforehand. Everyone I met was happy to help me.
The social event opportunities weren't great but I am sure that if the placement was longer I would have had more opportunities.
I found out about weekly sports games and social events.
I would definitely recommend Michael O'Mara for anyone wanting to go into publishing.
