The Role
I have really enjoyed my time with Grant Thornton, I had no prior experience before starting my internship, but have felt like I was able to get stuck in from the start. I can't believe how fast the time has gone, and would definitely recommend it to anybody considering doing the internship.
Grant Thornton seem to employ people not only on their ability to get the job done, but also their personality. Everybody is lovely and eager to help you learn, and always appreciative of the work that you do for them. There have been plenty of opportunities to be sociable outside of work too!
If there was ever anything that needed sorting we had plenty of people in the office who were willing to help and give guidance. I was told by a lot of people that if I ever needed anything then I could send them an email and not be afraid of asking.
The work load has been well balanced, there is nearly always work available to be done, and we also have a couple of side projects to do to make sure that we are always busy. I have been working on a presentation for my final day, and also doing some work on fundraising for a local charity.
I have been given plenty of tasks and left to make decisions for myself, but always had support if I wanted to ask questions. I was speaking face to face with clients on my second day, the fact that my colleagues had enough confidence in me to do that meant that I felt more confident about the decisions I was making.
I study Maths at university, so will not really be able to use the technical skills until I start work as a graduate. Aside from this, I will definitely use the social skills that I have developed during my time here. We have taken part in a presentation workshop which will definitely come in useful for my final year, and being able to talk to clients and everybody else in the office has helped to improve my confidence levels.
The Company
Despite everybody working very hard, there is always light hearted conversation in the office which made me feel at ease when I first started. There is never anybody that doesn't have time to speak to you, and the fact that everbody gets on so well makes it a really nice place to work. I don't think I have been in the office once when the atmosphere has been in any way negative!
I have known from the beginning what jobs and where abouts I will be for the whole of the internship. The people that I have been working with have always made an effort to get in touch before each job starts to make sure that I know where I need to be and when, and there has been no confusion at all.
For our very first day every single intern in the country travelled down to London and stayed in a hotel, met up in a table tennis bar for the evening and had a day in London for a big welcome from the new CEO, Sacha Romanovitch (all paid for)! We also had a 2 day training course at the Grant Thornton training centre, with all meals and accommodation included, to improve upon our presenting skills in preperation for our final week presentations.

I would love to continue working here as a graduate, if they offer me a job at the end of this internship!
The Culture
I have been involved in the office netball team, been to a national football tournament in Leeds for the weekend where we also socialised in the evening with a meal and drinks, and also been invited to numerous pub lunches and a big end of year BBQ one Friday night. I have really enjoyed the social aspect of the internship, especially as I get on with everybody so well.
I have been living at home so not had to pay any rent, but from going out to socialise nothing is overly expensive in Sheffield.
I have not actually been on a night out in Sheffield with work, I've heard good things though!
Plenty of opportunities to get involved if you wanted to, some of them even at lunchtime which made it even easier to be sociable.
