    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement with Mace very much. There was something new to be involved with every week, which meant there was never a dull moment and helping to be part of the delivery team for a substantial project was very rewarding. You get to meet and have discussions with people from all walks of life who have such substantial knowledge, advice and experience, it can be a very humbling and an encouraging life experience. The head office support was always there and we were given direct contacts to speak to anyone about any concerns.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt highly valued by my colleagues and there was a nice family atmosphere working for Mace. My colleagues were always willing to answer questions and any work I did for them was greatly received and most definitely not forgotten.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given constructive support and guidance on an almost regular basis. If I had any questions/ queries I could easily go to my line manager or senior colleagues and they were happy to help/ guide. I was offered advice on my professional development and career.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As I was on a placement, I wasn't inundated with work and responsibility from day one, they had given me time to introduce myself, find out who did what on the team and more importantly get a base understanding of the project. Then, work would come about from whoever required assistance and this eventually developed into regular projects and tasks set by all members from the team whether that be from the commercial team, MEP and construction/ site teams. This meant the there was something different to work on every week and they were projects of interest and quality,

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Not a lot to begin with, but as the project went on and there was more going on and a bit of requesting from myself I was allowed to oversee certain projects with a degree with autonomy. Also the head office team also provided us with a autonomous challenge to complete before the end of the placement which had a lot of support and guidance.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • All the skills that I had developed during my placement will most definitely help for my final year studies. Examples include, time-keeping, confidence and research skills. The programme also includes very high quality lectures at head office every 1-2 months which are on particular aspects of a construction project which re-enforce learning from university.
