About You
Interning with Softwire was an incredibly valuable experience. As I had opted for a very short placement of just 2 weeks, the team were very quick to get me into a project and start gaining experience.
I was put on an internal project that required building from the ground up. The finished article was an app that would be used in the office, It was brilliant to be working on a project that I knew would have an impact once I had left. As the project progressed the senior employees recognised that the project had some profitable value and now intend to market the application. This shows the real benefit of interning at a small(er) company.
I was assigned both a line manager and an project manager. The line manager was responsible for making sure I settled into the company and ensuring that my aspirations for the placement were met. The project manager supplied me with technical support, giving me many hours of teaching each day, and also guided me through the project process.
As a mechanical engineer interning at a software consultancy, the learning curve was steep. The intention was to gain exposure to as many coding languages as possible and learn when and where they should be used. Over two weeks I had learnt 4 additional languages and gained a good base of knowledge on the architecture of software systems. Even if I don't pursue software engineering as a career this exposure will be incredibly useful to me as this understanding can be applied to many multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
The Company
The project was well structured with a three tiers of project readiness. Time-scales were discussed and worked to throughout the placement.
Softwire is a very friendly company who socialise frequently. The office atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and follows the 'modern office' practise. There is a large kitchen and social area with a pool table, table football, nintendo wii and many other games -colleagues frequently gather to give their brains a rest!
