The Role
My enjoyment of the internship varied throughout the duration there. Sometimes, I was motivated and keen to get to work, and once there I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, there were other times when it dragged and I felt I was not being given enough tasks. Also I did not go on any site visits or meetings, so my time was spent wholly in the office, which meant it was not varied.
I believe I was valued by my colleagues, and my role was important for them to deliver their work. However, the majority of my work was research or printing documents off ahead of their meetings so it was hard to see the full benefit of this work for them.
I was given a lot of support from my supervisors, mainly the secretary in charge of my department who found me a desk to work at each day and helped me when I had any IT issues. The members of the team were really attentive to my needs.
I would say this varied quite a lot, some days I would have 5 or 6 tasks to do from various people, and I would have to prioritise which needed doing first. Other days, I would feel that there was not enough work for me to do, so would ask other team members if they needed any help.
I feel that I was not given a significant amount of responsibility, my main roles were research for people, and didn't have many, if any opportunities to express my work.
I feel that the skills I gained are similar to ones I have previously developed both at Savills and other work experiences, including note taking and digesting information.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office in general was very laid back, with jokes and a sense of community. Within my team everyone got on well and it was like a family.
I don't think it was well organised, we were only sent our contracts one week before starting, and told we had to return them signed in the post 5 days later. Little information was given to us after we had been accepted onto the internship, and there was miscommunication between HR and teams.
This has been limited, apart from one meeting with HR and an appraisal at the end, there has been limited one-on-one contact.
Company Parties/Events
It is evident that there are perks to the job at Savills, with plenty of opportunities to develop within the company. I believe Savills is very similar to other Real Estate companies as they all have similar perks, including corporate events and parties.
The Culture
There was, we went out for lunch on several occasions and frequently shared notes. There was mention that Savills would provide a lunch for us with our directors on the last day however this didn't get organised by the company.
Getting to work cost me around £9 a day, which added up over the month. Unfortunately this was not covered in expenses so this took a large sum of my wages out.
The nightlife is very good in this area, with a strong student population and a good number of high end bars.
Yes, each week I was involved in the Softball Real Estate League with Savills which was a good opportunity to meet clients and interact with colleagues.
