The Role
I am really satisfied with my internship at Barclays. If you are interested in a career in financial/banking industry this a great place to start!
All the people at Barclays (within my team especially) were very supportive and made me feel welcome. Can't say a single bad word about my colleagues.
My Line Manager was a really great guy. He was very supportive and eager to help me with whatever issue I was having.
I have to admit that my first two weeks were rather boring, since I had to request every single software package and wait for it to be approved by 'hundreds' of managers above me. Until I got all approvals I was practically unable to do any proper work. After that, however, the work got interesting. I had a decent amount of tasks to do - enough to keep me busy during the day, but not too many, so that I would have to work overtime.
That's one of the greatest benefits of interning at Barclays - if you want, you can get involved in real life projects and take a lot responsibility on your shoulders.
I study Computer Science and as a developer I didn't learn much, that I could apply in my studies. Having said that, I have to admit that I gained a lot of financial knowledge. Therefore, if you study Economics, Finance or any related subject, you will really benefit from interning at Barclays.
The Company
Barclays really cares about its employees when it comes to personal development. There are tons of free training sessions and online courses available to anyone within the company. If you are interested in some particular area, there might already be a club, that holds regular meetings to discuss the topic. And if there isn't you can easily start one yourself!

The Culture
Unfortunatelly, most of the bars and restaurants in Canary Wharf are seriously overpriced and always full of people. Similarly, the apartments in the area are really expensive, hence most of the interns were commuting from other parts of London.
As long as you want to spend your Thursday and Friday night with your friends in a bar or pub, Canary Wharf is a good choice for you. If, on the other hand, you prefer to go dancing to a club, you need to go somewhere else (central London most probably) - there aren't any decent places around Canary Wharf.
Barclays has a great number of social groups that you can join. Some of them are really lively and organize activities every week or so. The selection of interest groups is really impressive, there are sport groups, book-lovers group, etc.
