The Role
Having been here for almost a month now, I can honestly say it has been the best experience so far in terms of being able to learn new skills, meeting new people and been given every opertunity to develop myself.
The team is always supportive and is well invested in my devolopment especially my Line manager. Even though these are industry leading professionals at the forefront of business they find the time to help you pick up the skills and business.
I came in with little or no knowledge about the system my team was working on but was given constant support and help to pick up the skills to understand the system better. On occation one of my team mate took an hour off each day to give me an appreciation on SQL and sharepoint, having come from electronics background this helped me tremendously to grab hold of the system I was working on.
Quite busy. You are always engaged. But dont get me wrong these aren't always desktop work. More than often these are other activities you take part in like networking sessions, citizenship challenge, meeting other interns learinig sessions and the lot.
You are give responsibility as soon as you have started to pick up on what it is that you will be working on. These are never anything that you cant do. There is always help around you just have to look and ask. There were occations when I started the day with ' How on earth am I supposed to do that?!' and ended it with 'Yep, smashed it!' and thats the joy.
The skills I learned at barclays are invaluable and will help me through out my professional life. You learn everything from networking to programming. plus its the small things that you pick up from your colleagues and team while you are here that is the real gem. Bear in mind these are professionals working in a world leading company who have a lot of experience behind them.
The Company
'Lively', is the word I would use to describe it. People interact to each other, sometime you can even find a meeting going on next to someone's desk just like that. At times you hear random applause when a team has achieved thier goals or targets. You could walk up to any one as long as they are not busy and ask them to give you an appreciation on their side of business and they would happily sit down with you and go through it with you. My point is everyone will happily invest in you. A sense of colaboration.
I was given tasks on a daily basis when I arrived and was given bigger tasks once I had picked up the concepts and skills. But the overall structure was well organised to help me develop in terms of my personal skill set as well as my understanding of the system I was working on.
Heavily, I would say. We had a couple od training sessions for networking and technology. But the company itself is the real book here from which you can learn,if you get what I mean. You are surrounded by world leading professionals trying to keep the banking industry at the forefront of technology and the oppertunity to learn is in every nook and corner.
High, Barclays as far as i know is one of the few firms that keep you in rotation throughout the grad offer allowing you and the firm time to analyse your sills and strengths and then determine where it can be applied best to accelerate the firms growth.
The Culture
Poeple are friendly here. You can set up meetings with anyone and hear from them their views on the business, career etc.. Even MD's. Yep thats right! an intern can set up a meeting with an MD and have a chat with them to get an insight into their career progression and advices on the matter.
This is London. As such house prices are high. But its a small price to pay for the wonderful opportunity you get.
Again, London. Have a guess.
Yep. you get to do citizenship challenges. Where in you get to partner up with a local charity and use your particular skills to help them make the charity better.
