The Role
The internship was well structured with workshops and talks to help us learn about the industry as well as enough time to get stuck into work with our team. There were also social events incorporated into the internship so overall these factors made it both very enjoyable and interesting/useful.
I felt valued by my colleagues from the first day. They were all very good at making sure I was introduced to everyone around me in the office as well as involved within the team projects.
It was easy to ask questions to my team if ever I was unsure about something. Similarly the graduate recruitment team were always on hand to ask about any issues. The talks we had throughout the internship also ensured that we had enough opportunity to ask questions.
For the majority of the week I was kept busy with different tasks - mostly when I was involved on a particular project. There were some moments towards the beginning when I had less to do, but at this point I had been pointed in the direction of research reports and market updates which were useful and interesting to read. We had also been given an internship task to do in any spare moments.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement. Initially I was introduced to the department and the simple processes and then gradually given more responsibility and was able to more and more on my own.
The work experience I have done on this placement will be paramount to the studies I am about to complete. I will now be able to use real life experience to back up the theory I am about to learn. This will be advantageous to my studies and additionally it has positively shown me first hand what to expect as a full time employee here.
The Company
The atmosphere was a really good balance of working hard and having a relaxed/social atmosphere. The open plan office helps to socialise with as many people in the company as possible.
The organisation of the internship was really structured and we were given talks as well as networking events to attend around the work we were doing within our individual teams. We were given all of this information on the first day and calendars to organise our time with both HR and our team.
I am confident that I now have a good understanding of the many different departments within the company, and this was given to me by current employees taking time to talk to us about the individual roles. The company was sure to make sure we saw as much of the industry and firm as possible and to make sure we got as much out of the internship as we could.
Future job prospects with the company are extremely appealing and working this internship has confirmed it is a company I would love to work long-term.
The Culture
The environment made it very easy to socialise with the other people on the internship - both inside and outside of working hours and it was an enjoyable group to be around.
I personally was able to stay with friends in London so I had no accommodation costs. Socialising in London is obviously more expensive than other areas.
They were many opportunities presented to us where we could do activities outside of working hours. Twice on my internship we played Rounders either with my department or with the other interns and graduates.
