The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. Grant Thornton had a great working environment which put me at ease from the start. The initial training we received was really useful and it was great to get involved in real client projects in a range of teams.
The fact that I was given real client work to do made me feel highly valued. Additionally, colleagues asked for my feedback on work as well as my opinion on client issues. Overall I felt extremely valued by my colleagues, making the internship worthwhile.
There was a great deal of support available, particularly from my manager and my buddy. All other members of the team were also supportive and they were all friendly and willing to answer any questions I had.
Although I was able to complete a variety of work, there were some quiet times when I felt I wasn't as productive as I could have been. That being said, initially this was partly due to my nerves as I was reluctant to ask for work to do at times.
I was given a great deal of responsibility from the outset, which made me fell that I was really contributing to the company as a whole. Although I had responsibilities of my own, there was always someone to guide me and offer support.
Time management, organisation and collaboration are just a few vital skills I developed during my internship, all of which will be key in my degree. I also learnt a great deal of technical skills throughout which will assit in my future career. I gained a lot of confidence over the four weeks, which will be a great help with my degree and beyond.
The Company
The atmosphere was really friendly which made me fell more relaxed at the start of my internship. Everyone was really welcoming, although at times some members of staff seemed to be a bit stressed with a lot of deadlines!
We were given a full timetable for our internship on the first day and were kept updated with any changes regularly. If there was anything I was unsure about, there was always someone available to ask. Overall, the internship was extremely well organised.
I felt that the company fully invested in me as we were provided with relevant training. I also found the company's performance review process very useful. I felt that Grant Thornton invested in me as much as they would for any new permanent member of staff.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Completing an internship at Grant Thornton only made me. Ore excited about the prospect of working for them! So I was delighted when I received a graduate job offer!
The Culture
There was a good social scene, however, it was difficult to organise social events with my fellow interns as we were all based at different client sites. That being said, there were a lot of other events within the department to get involved in.
I can't comment on the cost of living as I lived at home during my internship. However, in terms of socialising, in my opinion the area is reasonably priced.
Nightlife was great! There's a lot of restaurants and bars as well as other activities to try!
There were a lot of social activities planned as well as sports teams to get involved in. At times I was reluctant to get involved as I was a bit nervous, however, I definitely felt more comfortable getting involved towards the end of my internship.
