    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at Grant Thornton everyone who I worked with made me feel welcome and part of the team. My manager was really good at allowing me to try different things and also arranged for me to spend some time in other departements so in order to get a better understanding of Grant Thornton and what they do.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues alqays made you feel valued whether it was whilst you was out at a client site working on an audit or back in the office. You were made to feel that the work you was completing was helping the team out and therefore making a valued contribution to the audit.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Due to the nature of audit I spent a fair amount of time out of the office and away from my manager, however I was always able to contact him by email where necessary. Each job I was assigned to had an supervisor who I could also go to with any problems.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied quite alot, on some jobs I found I was really busy and constantly had plenty of things to do whilst ay other times I found it was much slower I guess it just depends on what job it is and also if the client has provided the necessary information. The internship also has other projects that you can get involved in so at slower time I tended to do some more work on these and also prepare for my final presentation.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During the internship you are given responsibility to complete tasts independently, however someone will always explain what it is you need to do and why it is a necessary part of the audit. There was always someone I could ask for help if there was anything I was unsure on so the responsibility didn't feel like too much.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During the internship I went to Bradenham Manor where a number of interns from across the country get together to take part in a workshop to help develop your presentation skills. This was good fun and also allowed me to practice my presentation skills and try and new presentation tools I had been taught whilst meeting other interns.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a nice atmosphere in the office where everyone made you feel welcome. As people are not always in the office I found I was meeting new people all the time and that they were always happy to get you involved. I spent time in different departments of the office and found this true of all departments.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall the insternship was very well organised, the first day in London set out what to expect for your time with the Firm. Once in my local office on my second day I was shown how to look at my schedule and I was able to see what jobs I was working, when I was working on them, where they were and also who I would be working with. This was great as I was able to see straight away what I would be doing and when.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm did invest in you. The first day was in the London office with all the summer interns from all offices and across different service lines. This day gave you a chance to learn more about Grant Thornton and what to expect from the internship and project you could get involved with. The prentation skills workshop in Bradenham was also an area in which the firm invested in you.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a number of opportunities to socalise with colleagues, the night before my first day all the interns met in London and we went to a bar and had ping pong tournaments! This was really nice as it allowed you to meet eveyone before the first day. One of the audits I worked on was an away job so I spent a week away and found that everyone was really social. When in the office there was sometime team lunches or after work drinks. There was also the Summer Ball which was a great night!
