The Role
Very good opportunity to carry out scientific research using state-of-the-art equipment and with staff who are experts in their field.
Placement students are included fully in the organisation and are invited to other staff events. One criticism was that sometimes our contribution is overlooked.
My supervisor was extremely helpful and offered help when required, as did other members of the department and organsiation.
Workload varied depending on what work was being carried out at the time. Some weeks were very busy and others were less so. During these times it was possible to carry out university work if required.
I was given full responsibility for my project and other tasks that I completed, but support was available if needed.
Skills were gained which have helped me obtain a job and complete my degree to a higher level than I believe would have been the case if I hadn't carried it out.
The Company
I was in a small office that was extremely friendly and where people were always willing to help.
Some of the work organised with SRG, the recruitment company, was badly managed.
I was fully trained in every bit of equipment required to carry out my project as well as others. Seminars were given that allowed us to learn other topics as well.

The department is undergoing a reorganisation at the minute and so there is a recruitment freeze.
The Culture
Placement students were very sociable and would regularly organise events and meet up out side of work.
Rent was £300 a month excluding bills and the price of beer was relatively cheap (about £2.50)
A lot of pubs and one nightclub. Close to London and Cambridge as well so there are a lot of options.
You organise it yourself but opportunities do exist if your willing to go and grab them.
