About You
Working here was an absolute delight. I was given challenging tasks, as well as real client work to respond to. Having experienced work within a so called 'magic circle' firm, I can say with confidence that the working environment at Shoosmiths is second to none. The only reason I am not giving a 10, is because the placement is too short.
Absolutely felt like part of the team from day 1. In my short time here, I went out for lunch with colleagues, enjoyed friday drinks and nibbles and generally felt welcomed and valued.
I had a team around me that were absolutely approachable, from the solicitors, partners and beyond. Everyone seems to be treated equally here and that is something I value greatly. Even though I tried to take initiative where I could, everyone was more than happy to answer any questions that I may have had during my time there.
Getting hands on experience with real client work in invaluable. It puts the otherwise abstract legal concepts we learn at university into some context, which will definitely assist my studies going forward.
The Company
We were given a package from graduate recruitment to complete during our week. This was our main assignment during our time here. It was well structured and allowed us to demonstrate a range of different skills. The only downside is when we were given real client work, our time was very limited and this caused quite a lot of anxiety. Again, if we had longer, this would be less of an issue.
Generally the atmoshpere was friendly, relaxed and down to earth, whilst maintaining an underlined professionalism. I think the balance was struck brilliantly. There were of course times of high stress, which are to be expected, but I never heard anyone lash out at anyone, or let their hard work negatively affect others around them.
The graduate team structured the programme so as to allow us to demonstrate our skills, whilst simaltaneously assessing our performance, so that we may, if suitable, be invited to the assessment centre for the training contract. As such, it feels as though Shoosmiths already see us as potential candidates, to join the firm in the future. Also, we were given general advice by our hosts about our online presence, business development and how we can get ahead in the legal market; invaluable advice.
As I elucidated before, the real work we are given gives a unique insight into the work of the firm. I was also invited into a client meeting one day, which lasted for two and a half hours. This certainly demonstrated to me the kind of day to day work that goes on; from the monotonous to the exciting!
Shoosmiths' culture is driven home throughout the placement. Everyone really lives it; it is a friendly, down to earth yet professional culture and this is reflected in everyone here.
I am more certain than ever that I want to progress into the legal profession.
Everything Else
I was paid £250 for the week.
Unforntunately not much external networking, but Friday drinks and nibbles helped me get to know everyone in the office in a relaxed environment.
There wasn't much social events or networking events organised. In fairness, my host did invite me to an external event, but this was cancelled due to bad weather.
My host Alex discussed a lot about his business development/networking events and how to go about meeting people in the profession and beyond.
I think everyone would love it here.
