The Role
I throughly enjoyed the internship. It involved four two week rotations and, while I preferred certain desks to others, enjoyed my experience of each of the seperate teams and valued the experience of being able to see a wide range of positions in the bank.
Everyone has an incredible amount of time to talk to interns. I am thoroughly impressed. There is also a surprising amount of responsibility entrusted upon interns.
Very good support structure to the internship with line managers, buddies, HR and internship co-ordinators to help with any queries or issues.
Whil it admittedly varied desk to desk I found that I was generally very busy. Thhose desks that I enjoyed the most were those that ensured that I was always rushed off my feet.
While there are regulatory limitations tot he amount of responsibility a sales intern can be given I found that I was challenged with tasks that I did not expect at such a junior level, and my team were always looking to challenge me by giving me a new, more advanced task.
I have graduated from university so the internship will not benefit my studies but the confidence I gained as well as the relationship building skills will be of use for the rest of my career.
The Company
The general atmosphere is very, very positive. I never imagined that it would be such a friendly place to work. I interned on the sales and trading floor, where ecveryone is always rushed off their feet, but everyone still had plenty of time to talk to me and explain to me their roles. As a bank Barclays must have one of the most friendly and supporting atmospheres on the street.
Excellent organisation. There were sessions organised for us to learn about different products and concepts as well as things like trade ideas and stock pitches to keep us busy throughout the internship. The rotations ensured that you got to see a large range of businesses and were very well co-ordinated.
There were teaching sessions every friday however the main aspect of the bank's investment was the time that the employee's on the floor put into teaching you about the products. This is completely down to the fantastic atmosphere that exists in the bank
I think the bank is going into a fantastic place in terms of its future prospects. It is ahead of regulatory requirements and I feel over the past few years has perhaps faltered jumping over some large hurdles but I feel that over the next few years it will be a large competitor on the street and thus feel it is a very appealing place to work.
The Culture
The social scene was mixed however in a place with so many employees you will always find people you want to socialise with.
Living and socialising costs in London are high however these will be the same for any top tier bank in Canary Wharf.
In Canary Wharf the nightlife is limited but it is hard to complain when London is so close.
There are lots of sports teams which you can join as well as a citizenship challenge which almost al of the interns have taken part in.
