The Role
The internship was a great experience, there was a lot more flexibility than i anticipated and you get to take a degree of ownership in deciding which product area you would like to rotate to. Everyone is also very accomodating and gives you the time of day
I felt very valued which was one of the nice things about working there. However you have to earn people's respect and not expect it, they dedicate a lot of resources to make sure they add value to your internship and in turn you need to do the same for them
I was given a good level of support. Feedback is something that is key to get in order for you to understand how you are being perceived. The nice thinkg about Barclay's is that if you ask anyone they will give you this feedback, no matter what level of seniority they are
I was busy on the trading floor but this is the best way to learn. It takes a while to grasp some of the concepts so keeping yourself busy even if you havent been set work is extremely important if you want to reduce this learning curve. There are always opportunities for networking as well and even if you are busy doing projects etc, you will most likely always be utilising other people in the bank anyway, so another way to network
Working on the trading floor meant i couldnt have any direct client contact myself, which is the core responsbility of someone in sales and trading. That being said, within my team i was given important tasks to do that were sent indirectly to the clients. Overall i would say it varies from team to team but generally, given the regulatory restraints, the relative level of responsibility is high
I have already graduated so for me it is more about the benefits to my CV. A Barclay's internship is very well regarded in the industry and you are given a high level of training which all employers would recognise
The Company
Really fun. There is a lot of noise and excitement on the trading floor, especially when some important data is released. It is a fun place to be regardless of the role you are doing
The internship ran smoothly. HR organised a number of social events that give a great opportunity to network with senior people. There is also scope to do rotations depending on where you work
We were given frequent training sessions such as a "macro university" every friday. These are really useful as they give you an overview of products/areas in the bank that you may not be familiar with

They are good, provided you are a good fit within Barclay's and have shown your capabilities, there is every chance of moving onto the graduate programme
The Culture
The social events and the first week of training give a good opportunity to meet your fellow interns. As you go through the programme you can use contacts you've made to support your own workflow. Generally drinks happen most Friday's and everyone is always happy to have a chat
Expensive. But it is London and you just have to accept it unfortunately
Again, its London, a major global city. If you're into good nightlife there arent many better places
Yes absolutely. Barclay's have a wealth of social clubs and societies and the impression i got is that they are always happy to include summer interns. There is also a women's network who are very active with the female interns
