About You
Overall the insight was highly enjoyable, which was down to the work, the people and the social life outside of the office. Both teams I worked with had me involved in real-life work which was challenging but well-explained.
Each member of the team helped me to come to terms with difficult concepts and guided me through the big picture of the deals they were working on. On the flip side of this, I felt comfortable attending social events with my team on a regular basis.
I received a great deal of guidance and support, even though the teams were busy with unusually high workloads. Sometimes I had to time my questions to coincide with this, but the majority of the time everyone made time to support me in my work.
I undertook legal research which will likely be relevant in my degree this coming year, but the main skills I gained will come to use during the LPC and in the workplace, such as contracts drafting, civil procedure rules and carrying documents to court.
The Company
Always very well-structured, and being notified of events through the Outlook calendar ensured that we had a helping hand with remembering what we had on each day. Talks were relevant and insightful, and the social events organised were of the highest order.
I enjoyed my time throughout, and the atmosphere was one of a buzz of excitement and positive working relationships rather than stress. I was able to celebrate important milestones with my team and felt involved every single day.
I felt like my daily role was one of a real trainee, working on the team's genuine deals and undertaking trainee tasks such as delivering documents to court. I also took part in training workshops and team meetings, in line with what would be expected in a full-time role with the firm.
Company culture was an important aim, with talks from the graduate recruitment and managing partners explaining the vision of the firm, as well as an insight into the workings of law school which was given by BPP representatives.
Everything Else
There were numerous opportunities, with trainees attending the social events after work. There was also a partners networking brunch, as well as lunch with the supervisors on the final day. As a result I feel like I met a number of employees which were outside of my department.
There were numerous social activities - almost one per evening if you were keen to get involved, and I took part in most of those, all of which were covered by firm expenses. Clearly the firm places a lot of importance on the well-being of its employees outside of work.
The placement provided an insight into everyday life at a law firm. It was filled with genuine work and learning support, as well as experiencing life outside of the office through numerous sports and social events. The time there was challenging and I learned a lot to take forward, both for my law degree and beyond.
