The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year with Eaton, there were plenty of opportunities which I got involved with. The placement was packed with a mix between day-to-day tasks and project work which I found thoroughly enjoyable.
The team which I was working with, and around the office were extremely welcoming and friendly. It was a great environment to work within as I was exposed to various functions within the UK and around the world which boosted my confidence.
My manager was fantastic, always willing to take out the time of her schedule and help and guide me when needed. We had frequent reviews throughout the year to discuss progress and any issues, and I really valued her mentorship not only about working life and career options but also on a personal level.
There was always something to do. Whether it was reporting tasks, project work or even ad-hoc tasks there wasn't a time when I had nothing to do. If I felt like I had completed my work, my manager always gave me the opportunity to get stuck into other tasks which was great.
Working in a head office environment, there was a lot of emphasis on taking ownership of the work I produced. The reports I produced were sent to directors, finance and the operations teams within the UK and around the Eaton network. I was also part of a team working on a new scorecard which was going to be used by many stakeholders within the business. On the whole, my placement with Eaton was full of responsibility.
There have been many skills and attributes that I developed with Eaton that I have taken with my to University and also implemented in my personal life. There were around 7-8 training days in which us interns had to attend throughout the year and those sessions varied from professional development, communication skills and presentation skills. One of the most valuable sessions for me was the presentation skills training event for our Milestone Event. I will use those skills learned for my dissertation presentation in April 2016.
The Company
As I was working in a head office, there were times when many people were out of the office so it did feel empty sometimes. However, there was always a team of us within Finance who were in so it wasn't too bad. You could always have a laugh with your colleagues.
Really well organised. We had a dedicated Intern Programme Manager who was overseeing our progress. Communication about training and appraisal dates were given well in advance. My manager was great as well as she organised site visits for me to go out and see what working at a site was really like,
I felt like to company really invested in my training and development. As said earlier, we had training days specifically for us and really felt valued. My buddy also was a great source of support throughout the year.

I would really like to join the Eaton Leadership Programme in the nearby future. After completing my placement year I feel like Eaton would be the right company to kick-start my career with after having such an enjoyable year with them.
The Culture
Our intern group all got on really well, we would socialise and have a catch up after training days. At work as well, our team used to go out for lunch together so there was a good social scene within the company. It was also a great way to get to know your colleagues better.
Leamington Spa is quite an expensive area relative to other towns around the area. Myself and another intern tried to find accommodation together but we left it too late so was quite expensive would recommend starting housing searches well in advance. We ended up finding accommodation through spareroom.co.uk. Restaurants and bars were so good, really nice range to choose from.
Very good. Smack is rated the 8th best nightclub in the world (strongly recommend going there!). Again lots of bars to choose from. Drinks were cheap on the student nights and go out then!
Yes! Mainly socialising but still a great way to get to know your colleagues.
