The Role
Unilever was a really exciting place to work. There is a great atmosphere with the other placement students and I enjoyed being given a fair amount of responsibility and flexibility.
I definitely came away feeling valued. As the projects I was working on were useful and relevant to the work of my colleagues I felt like a fundamental part of the team by the end of the year.
There was a good amount of training available, and it was tailored to each individual employee so you could pick and choose what skills to develop. My manager gave me the time to learn new things and widen my skill set.
For most of the placement I was very busy, although towards the end when I was wrapping up and handing over all of my projects it was hard to get stuck in to anything.
I was given a huge amount of repsonsibility, but it's not just loaded on you at once so don't be put off!I was given responsibility over projects, this was probably one of my favourite things about working at Unilever.
My degree was not related to the placement, but from a business point of view and learning the ins and outs of a large company it was a very useful year.
The Company
The placement was brilliantly organised. All of the training and intro meetings were out of the way within a week or two, so that I could begin my project asap.
I had all of the relevant training alongside the permanent staff, and I got the impression that if I needed anything above and beyond this then they would have been willing to provide it.
Most impressive thing about the placement. I was given feedback on my strengths and room from improvement from as early as the phone call that offered me the position. They genuinely want you to do well.

A year placement at a company will always help in finding a job with them in the future, though this is not a definite outcome.
The Culture
Yes, and over the summer there were summer placement students also. We organised events amongst ourselves and kept in contact throughout the year.
I was living at home, but from other students' experiences it seems as though it was rather expensive, although if your main office was inside the M25 you received a "London living allowance".
I worked in two offices, one in Surrey and one on Embankment in London. The Surrey office didn't have very much in the way of social opportunity but the City of London was great
There are plenty of things to do, however the limiting factor is time. Between work and completing Uni assignments, there wasn't much time left for outside activities.
