The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Barclays. I was given a good amount of responsibility and work to do. It was both challenging and rewarding.
My team constantly gave me time to talk through progress on any work I was doing and give me support and feedback.
I had weekly 1:1s with my Line Manager which were extremely helpful and a 'buddy' who I sat next to, to ask any small questions.
I had exactly the right amount of work to do during the period. My objectives were over the whole time period so it was up to me to organise my time and get the work done in a independent manner
A good amount of responsibility, so that it wasn't over pressurised, but I did feel valued and that the work I was doing was important
I developed good transferable skills, in networking and how to conduct yourself at work, along with presentation skills.
The Company
Good balance between hard work and general conversation. Everyone was very friendly and I was surprised at how much time senior members of the company had to give to interns if you organised it.
The placement is well organised in structure in terms of each intern being assigned a Line Manager who conducts your reviews. There was also a good support system within HR. Some aspects, such as receiving the contract and engagement letter in a timely manner were not well organised, and at times communication before the placement started from HR were slow.
A great deal. We had 2 days of training before we joined our team which was hugely helpful. Networking events and information sessions were held throughout the internship. Even my immediate team were keen to have CV sessions with me before I left and asked what areas I want to developed and arranged opportunities in which I would do so.
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
Yes, very. Separately from the internship many interns organised to live together and stay in the same university halls over summer. Weekend and evening activities were organised between interns all the time.
