    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship with Centrica. I was given a 'live role' which means that my project is a current piece of work that was important to the company, and will continue to be used even when I leave. I really like the support system that is in place for the Summer Placements - I have the support of the grad team, my Line Manager, the CR team, my buddy, and certain members of the grad scheme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. My line manager has provided constant support from day one and encourages me to work hard and develop myself constantly, which I really appreciate. Furthermore, I work within the Corporate Responsibility team and each member of staff has offered their support and guidance to me. They understand the importance of my work and are always available to answer any questions, and help me find the answer if they cannot answer themselves.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Same as described in the answers above. I have weekly 121s with my line manager, and recently completed a mid-placement review, which was very useful for me to gain some feedback on my work so far, and to discuss what I can do to improve and progress moving forward with the next half of the placement. At each 121 I am reassured that my line manager is there to help, and she always provides me with work to keep me busy. My line manager went on 2 weeks annual leave and I did not feel like I had to contact her in her absence as she had explained exactly what she expected of me and provided me with all the information I needed before she left.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am kept very busy on a daily bases, which I love. I am the type of person that would rather be kept busy than left with nothing to do. Although I am busy throughout the days, I feel that my work load is manageable and I have been able to complete projects on time so far.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the start of the placement, I was given a medium level of responsibility through various 'support' roles, however, from the half way point onwards I feel that I had earned my line managers trust and respect, so she was able to give me leading roles on our projects when she went on 2 weeks annual leave.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've developed my time management and organisational skills - this will help me in future roles as it is important to stay on top of each project and make sure you are managing it efficiently and within a certain time frame/budget. I developed my communication skills, inclluding building relationships, through working with a variety of stakeholders - this will help me in the future as I have learnt how to both build and maintain positive relationships with different partners/agencies/colleagues, and feel that I am able to communicate effectively with other people to come to conclusions.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very dynamic and vibrant. There is always someone to talk to, but I am also able to sit down and concentrate on work when I need to

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well organised - I was provided with weekly updates from the grad team via email, I was able to contact/directed to the right contact for every query very quickly, I felt my placemen was very structured in that we knew exactly what we had to do and complete each week, and I communicated well with my line manager to make sure both parties were getting the most out of the placement.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a lot in terms of training and development. We were invited to presentation skills training, Excel training, a development day (team-building activities), and social media training, to name a few. I have learnt a lot from this placement.

    1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - I would be more than happy to come back to work for the company.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. The majority of the placement students lived together in Egham in student halls of residence, which made it really easy to hang out and attend social activities together. We went out on the weekends together, whether it was to see the nightlife around the local area, or whether it was to day trips to music festivals and thorpe park.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was quite expensive, and we found that Egham isn't the best location for a sociable lifestyle - we often found ourselves travelling out of the area and closer to london, which was expensive to get the train.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I'd say the same for the nightlife - we spent a lot of money on taxi's and trains to get to an area where we could have a great night out.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Mostly, the interns organised social activities amongst themselves. There were a few social activities organised by my team, but not many. Again, because Egham isn't a very lively town, it made it difficult to find places nearby to get involved in social activities.
