The Role
I really enjoyed it. Everyone was willing to help, my line manager was approachable and the work I was doing was really interesting. I felt that my manager trusted me to do things, and I was able to lead projects and take on responsibility.
My opinion was always valued in meetings, everyone was always willing to answer questions and I was given work that made a real contribution.
My manager was always on hand to help me and give me advice, whilst also allowing me to do my own work.
In the first week I was just trying to understand all the terminology, but after that I was able to take on more work. There were some intern events and also charity challenges organised. My working hours were 9-5, sometimes later, but not often.
I was able to lead a project myself, and take on different work from other projects.
The skills I developed were transferable to any job. I was able to experience a corporate environment and also how to work within a diverse team.
The Company
The office was very relaxed, but everyone got their work done. There were lots of young graduates on my team.
Initially, the IT was really slow and it took me almost two weeks to get a Laptop. However, HR were very organised and were willing to meet up to discuss my progress. The different internship activities were well organised and allowed me to meet other interns.
We had two days of training at the start and throughout we were encouraged to meet with senior staff members. It felt like everyone really wanted you to do well and enjoy the internship.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
The graduate scheme at Barclays is really good, and they tend to prefer people who have done the internship.
The Culture
Yes, we regularly met up for lunch and went for drinks after work.
London is a very expensive, but this was as expected.
There are lots of bars and pubs around that open late.
Yes, there are lots of clubs and societies. Further, the interns were always meeting up outside of work.
