    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I am currently in the 6th week of my 9 week placement. So far I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is definitely the best way to gain insight into a particular working environment. I have picked up a new skill set which I had not needed in my part time job in retail.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The most overwhelming thing about the placement so far as been the extent of the warm welcome I have received from all colleagues. Everyone offers support and will always have more than enough time to help at any time, even though they are extremely busy.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have 2 catch up sessions per week with my line manager to discuss progress, however he will come over to my desk multiple times a day too, to make sure everything is ok. If there are ever any issues they are quickly ironed out and I am given constant support.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There is always work to be done in the office and if you dont have any to do there will be work you can be given. You are never sitting with nothing to do and as a result the day will fly in for you!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Though you are an intern you are given real responsibilities. This helps develop your ability to deliver a report (for example) that another individual is relying on. You will be seen as a valued member of staff and will feel like an equal.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have finished my degree (just). I have not used any knowledge from my degree (which in my case is not a bad thing). During your internship you will get into the habit of coming into a 9-5 job and working from beginning to end. You will be able to prioritize tasks and keep up a high work ethic, which are all very transferable skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There is a very positive atmosphere in the office. Though my team in particular has to work very long hours they insure that everyone in the team is supported and you can always lean on others if you're ever struggling. The teamwork is exemplary.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is very structured. There are lots of sessions organised with senior leaders. This is an opportunity that many in the business do not get and so many are very keen to hear about what you have learned. It then creates a great feeling that you can pass on knowledge even though you're just in the door! All colleagues are aware of the program and know who you are. As a result they are extra supportive and will be very understanding.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The internship involved visitin London for 2 days (I am based in Glasgow) for initial training. From start to end there is learning material to be covered and sessions to go along to to gain insight into the business from a senior point of view.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Financial Bonus

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be delighted to be offered a [place with Barclays. The organisation has been exceptional towards interns and I can see it shows the same support to all staff. An example of this is when the interns wished to participate in some fundraising activities. We were given time out the office for this and it was very much encouraged. I couldn't recommend it highly enough!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Though there weren't many social activities formally arranged there is always encouragement to network among peers. We will often go to the pub after work or go for lunch together to make sure everyone is included and is having a great time.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in Glasgow is pretty average (definitely cheaper than London!).

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are always things to do and places to go in Glasgow. Everything is very easy to get to and from using public transport.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The interns (and sometimes the teams we work with) would often arrange drinks (in advanced or last minute) to include everyone and relieve any stress anyone has after lots of hard work.
