The Role
During my 4 weeks here, I was placed in the project management and building consultancy team. I worked closely alongside senior project managers but I really loved the fact that I had the opportunity to do lots of other things outside the project management role. I even had the chance to work with Building surveyors and Quantity surveyors which made my placement a lot more exciting. I loved coming into work everyday as everyone made me feel valued and made sure I was enjoying myself too. The best thing about my role was that I had lots of opportunities to go outside the office and attend site visits and project meetings in renowned and corporate locations. I met so many clients and people in the industry that I want to be in, and I've gained invaluable knowledge over the course of my internship.
My colleagues were really friendly and welcoming! They were easy to approach and always offered to help when I had any questions. The people in my department are all young and motivated individuals so I felt it was easy to fit in with their culture. They always made sure I had something to do even on the days where they had really busy schedules.
My manager was really friendly and approachable. I learned so much from him in terms of how to achieve my career goals and also about the industry I see myself in, in the future. I was always offered assistance when I needed it and he made sure I got the best out of my internship placement. Definitely someone I'll keep in touch with.
As an intern, I was given the opportunity complete work that was actually going to be used for the companies projects and I got to meet various clients. It felt like I was always busy as I was moving between offices in the city and west end, it was great to have a constant change of scene. I also attended site visits and project meetings outside London and the presentation task with all the other interns made sure that we were using our free time productively.
My role was to assist mainly project managers and building surveyors in the departments and all the tasks that I was given were used for the projects so it was nice to know that you played an important part as an intern. I think I could've been given some more complex tasks to challenge myself although I understand 4 weeks is a short time to learn and work independently on some complex project manager tasks.
The skills and training I've attained will assist me greatly! I have gained a wealth of knowledge about the job I want to pursue and the various opportunities that can open from studying my degree. My manager studied the same degree as me so now that I have close contact, I feel like I have gained a mentor to assist me throughout my studies. Before my placement, I wasn't sure about the next steps for my career, but I'd say I'm a lot more confident now on creating strategies for achieving my career goals.
The Company
The office atmosphere was never dull. There was always someone to speak to and I think having desks close to lots of seniors and associates meant that I had great network of people to communicate with. Everyone gets on really well and you can really see the hard work background as well the fun and down to earth side in every colleague.
The organisation of this internship was fantastic, even before it started. We had really friendly members of the HR team that always kept us up to date on what we should do prior to the start date and they helped us all settle in nicely. The welcome presentation was really professional and insightful, it made all us interns feel proud to work at Cushman & Wakefield for the four weeks.
I thought the presentation work shop was fantastic. They gave use great advice on how to prepare our self for future presentations and to have a professional and confident manner in the workplace. I think it would have been good to have one to one appointments with the graduate recruitment team just to talk about our progress, queries and next steps.
Company Parties/Events
Spending my four weeks here allowed me to meet some awesome people that I'd like to work with in the future. It was really motivating to see how young grads progressed their way up to take on bigger roles in a fairly short space of time. The company have a great APC programme, as well as various development programmes to ensure they retain professionals. I'd be thrilled to work for the company some day.
The Culture
None of the placement students had any issues with each other and I think we all got on really well. We were placed in groups for our presentations which helped us create a better bond with each other and I think we are all keen on staying in touch.
I had opportunities to move between the City and West-end office many times, so there were lots of places to eat and socialise. I loved the fact that I had other friends from college and university doing internship placements with other firms in the city so I always had people to meet up with at lunch time and after work.
The west end offers great fun for colleagues to go out and enjoy after work. There's lots of bars and clubs around both the city and west end office for people to meet up and socialise. Its all really close to tube stations too so traveling was always easy.
Some of the interns kindly offered to book bars every Monday evening after work for everyone to meet up and get to know each other. Really shows the friendly attitude of the individuals that Cushman & Wakefield hire. There was also sports events like softball and just fun graduate and intern meetups in the pub which was organised by various colleagues.
