The Role
Doing a placement year was an eye opening experience. It gave me the opportunity to gain insight into how a business was run, the day to day activities and the chance to head up my own project.
I felt particularly valued by the colleagues that I worked closely with. Sadly some colleagues were slow to reply to emails, for example, and I got the impression it was because I was "only a placement student."
My supervisor has given brilliant guidance throughout the year and I have been very fortunate to have a manager who was willing to put a lot of time and effort in to ensure I got the most out of placement in general - not just to come and finish a project.
Day to day work varied a lot for me. I was based in a GMP area so the training was extensive and therefore it took a long time for me to get going with my project. Some days were hectic and others I felt I had little to do.
For my own project, I was essentially given full responsibility and I took it upon myself to become involved with other activities and events and lead the organising of these for anything we did as a group of placement students.
The skills I've developed this year could not have been learnt at Uni - everything from professionalism to time management to general knowledge of mine is so much greater after this year than before.
The Company
Everyone was there to do their job and that was about it.
Some aspects were brilliant but I felt a lot of it was self-motivated.
I was trained to GMP standards and held personal review meetings with my supervisor.
Flexi Time
Financial Bonus
I've enjoyed the placement but sadly location is not ideal.
The Culture
It was self motivated, but we put together a good social scene.
More expensive than home (lived down south for a year!) but we got a bargain with the house we stayed in.
You tended to have to travel for Nightlife!
What you put in, you got out.
