About You
I enjoyed the insight very much. Both days were equally insightful as we learnt about the different service lines in KPMG, were trained in communication and networking skills and given applications advice, and participated in a case study competition.
We didn't really have much opportunity to contribute to the work of the firm given that it was only an Insight Programme. Nevertheless, the people at the firm took very good care of us, were very helpful at answering any questions we have and were very encouraging throughout.
The first day was mainly training and presentations from people (associates and managers) working in different service lines. The second day was a whole day of case study competition. Each group was assigned a mentor of sorts, and ours was very helpful in pointing out where improvements can be made in our analysis and presentation. He also let us do a trial run of the presentation and gave us tips on how to present better.
The case study portion links pretty well with what I learn in the business portion of my university degree (I study Statistics and Management). Beyond that, what I learnt during the insight certainly helped me make more informed decisions regarding my career.
The Company
The programme flow was good, but it could be improved by having more participative sessions in between the talks on the first day.
Everyone was friendly and eager, as far as I could tell. There wasn't too much competitive weighing down the atmosphere.
The purpose of the insight programme was to allow us to understand better what the firm does as well as to train us in relevant skills. The fact that they organised it shows that the firm was willing to invest in us. On a less important note, there was always coffee and biscuits around if we were hungry, which was great!
The insight only gave us an overview of what the different service lines do. We got to talk to some associates, who could answer our questions, but it would have been nice if there was some work shadowing portion or a tour around the work floor.
From the insight, I gathered that the people at KPMG are generally very friendly and supportive, more so than people I've spoken to at comparable firms. All of them also seem to really enjoy their jobs.
It helped me decide between banks vs professional services and decide on the service line I want to join.
Everything Else
Travel was reimbursed up to £50.
There was a networking session on the first day and some opportunity to talk to the associate assigned to our group on the second.
There could have been more employees, many of us ended up talking among ourselves as there were too few to talk to. A few who came were HR reps who couldn't really give us an insight into the work. It also should not have been held where it was with clusters of sofas and chairs as people couldn't move around mingle as freely as we'd like as a result.
There was a talk on the first day regarding this subject.
Definitely, if you are interested in a career in professional services.
