The Role
It was a very enjoyable experience as all of the employees and other interns were very welcoming and I enjoyed learning about the company and finding out what it would be like to work there from other peoples opinions.
Everyone who I came into contact with during my 4 weeks was very friendly and always willing to answer any of the my questions about the work or KPMG or just have a casual chat to. KPMG use a buddy system which was very helpful and helped me settle in well. I also never felt as though I couldn't approach anyone in my team that I was working with just because they were a different rank to me, as everyone always tried to make time for you.
The work for the 4 weeks was very well organised and I could easily find out who I would be working with each week and contact them for details of where to go, what time etc., though in many cases the managers would contact me first to let me know. Most managers were also very quick to respond to any queries. However the student recruitment team didn't make it very clear throughout the 4 weeks when our final interviews would be and what the procedure was, with many interns being told different things - this led to me being told the date and time of my interview the day before it took place.
In most cases I was kept busy with small tasks throughout the day which wasn't very hard and on a few occasions I wouldn't have anything to do. However this is completely what I was expecting and whenever this happened everyone was very apologetic and tried their hardest to find things I could help with. This didn't really bother me, as I still feel that I gained an insight into what it was like to work at KPMG through watching others and getting a feel of the atmosphere and work ethic.
The tasks that I was given to complete didn't require too much responsibility as, after all, we had no professional training for it - this is also what I was expecting beforehand. However we were given the responsibility to get to client offices by ourselves and organise the handing in of laptops and other things on the last day by ourselves,
Throughout my time at KPMG I worked within many groups and this showed how beneficial group work can be in my studies. There were also many aspects of audit which I can now understand better than I did from just learning accounting at university, so hopefully in my final year I will be able to my experience to help my studies.
The Company
Very friendly, everyone in my audit department seemed to know each other and most people each year group for the graduate trainees all seemed to know each other across the departments. As I went during summer the work was always quite relaxed as their busy season is in winter, therefore most of the time people left at 3pm on a Friday (a new policy that KPMG have just introduced - if your work is completed)
The schedualing for my work on clients was well organised however, there was very little information about the final interview and what to do on the last day of the internship, However there were some useful skills sessions and networking events organised for the interns whilst we were there.
We were all trained how to use their software on the laptops and given a laptop each to complete the work on, which was very useful as we won't need to be taught this again if we join as a graduate.

In the last week I had my final interview with a director (from a different department) after having a performance review with my performance manager to discuss my progress and performance during the 4 weeks - I was successful in this and was offered a graduate job a few days after the interview.
The Culture
There weren't any social events for all of the interns organised by KPMG, however we all managed to get in contact with each-other and go out for regular drinks in and around Canary Wharf. I was also able to attend department drinks whilst I was there with all members of the department I was in for the 4 weeks.
As I am not from London, I stayed in some university accommodation in Hackney while I was there which wasn't too expensive and was only a 30 minute bus journey away from Canary Wharf. A lot of the places in Canary Wharf are quite expensive for drinks, but there is a whetherspoons there for cheap drinks!
The nightlife in Canary Wharf was mainly cocktail bars and the whetherspoons which had a good atmosphere, but you could obviously travel anywhere in London to find something you like.
Not really during the internship, but we heard about a lot of things to do when you actually join KPMG such as the CSR days and joining their societies.
