The Role
It was one of the best experiences I've ever had. I has chosen to work for KPMG because they are centered around keeping people happy and putting them first. This really stood out from the day we arrived throughout the internship. There was so much to learn as I exposed to clients and a wide range of work.
I felt like an important part of the team as all my ideas were considered and sometimes taken on board. All the work I did was valued on the same level as the graduates who were on the team which made me feel very valued.
The in charges and managers on each client I worked on were very helpful and offered support along the way. If I experienced any challenges, or didn't understand any work, they were always happy to help and explain. The only issue I experience was the lack of guidance when I first joined. No one told me how to add my bank details, or update my new joiner information. However, the new joiner website promptly responded to emails.
Some days were better than others. During my first few days, I had almost nothing to do all day. However, as the weeks went by, my responsibilities were increased and I had control over my workload as I had a set deadline and assigned work which I could complete at my own pace.
I wasn't given much responsibility as I was only an intern and had no work experience. However, I got some responsibility which I did not expect. When I was on my second client, I spoke directly to the client when I needed information. I was also responsible for performing some tests as well as drafting work papers for them.
This internship has been an invaluable experience. I believe it will come in handy when I return to university, especially for my audit module as most of what we learnt was closely aligned to what I was doing on the work experience.
The Company
It was really relaxed and enjoyable. Everyone was really friendly and willing to have a chat and offer a helping hand. We had drinks Friday and casual day which was really fun.
Overall, it was quite organised. However, there were times when no one seemed to know what work to give me which gave me the impression they had not been prepared for me being there.
As I was only on the internship for a month, there was no need for any particular training and development.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I was offered a graduate job and I happily accepted. I look forward to returning next year, KPMG offers a rewarding training program in addition to the supportive work environment which makes it a very appealing company to work for.
The Culture
We had drinks Friday on the first Friday of the month as well as a department social which was relaxing and a great opportunity to meet everyone in the department in a social setting.
As I was only in Manchester for a month, it worked out quite expensive as it is hard to rent a room for such a short amount of time. There was a wide range of restaurants and shops, some affordable and others more expensive.
It was fantastic. There was plenty to do, from pubs to bars and clubs and lots of great restaurants. There was a great vibe to go with that as well.
KPMG has a range of clubs and societies so it was quite easy to get involved in different things outside of work.
