The Role
The work was really interesting and I gained a real insight into what life would be like working at KPMG. Being able to go out onto a client site was my particular highlight as it was an invaluable experience and it was fascinating to gain an in depth knowledge of that particular case.
The current trainees in particular were very welcoming towards me, and it was really good to chat to them informally to hear about their experiences. Others I worked with were also very friendly and always willing to help me. I was invited on a team social which helped me to meet new people in the department.
I had a few different people supervising me due to staff holiday etc which was a little confusing but meant that I was able to meet more people. They were always happy to answer any questions I had and to explain things I didn't understand.
My colleagues were happy to delegate work to me when possible, and all were helpful at assisting me in finding work. However, there were several occasions when I had nothing to do, although this was helpful in giving me time to prepare for my interview for the graduate scheme.
The level and type of responsibility depends very much on your abilities. I was given control of a fairly mundane but really important task. I became the point of contact for any queries about this area from my colleagues.
This internship helped me to develop a lot of key skills. It was my first real experience of working in an office environment, so I have learnt a lot about what that involves. My confidence has also increased as a result of the responsibility I was given. My greater knowledge of what skills the role requires will be of great assistance when I start as a graduate at KPMG next year.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and seemed to get along well with each other. I mainly spent time with the graduates, but the more senior colleagues I worked with were also really nice. Going on a department social allowed me to meet and chat to colleagues in a more informal setting which was good fun.
The internship seems a little more geared towards London-based interns, while those of us in regional offices were more removed. However, this could be seen as a positive as the internship is perhaps a bit more informal and more representative of what it is like to work there as a graduate.
We had an induction day on the first day which was the basis of our formal face to face training, as well as online resources which are the same as full time employees must complete. Some courses were mandatory while others were optional. Job-specific training and development was practical and on the job.

All interns are given a final partner interview for the graduate scheme in the final week of the placement. I am happy to say that I was successful at mine and will therefore be starting as a graduate at KPMG next year!
The Culture
There were no other Advisory interns in my office. There were work experience students at other levels so it was interesting to meet them, as well as current graduate trainees and those on school leaver programmes.
I commuted from home, which was fairly expensive but I saved on living costs. I am local to Leeds though so I know that the city is reasonably priced, far more so than London, meaning once I move there next year I will be able to enjoy a decent quality of life on my salary.
I didn't go out (apart from the department social) as I was commuting but Leeds' nightlife is well renowned and I can't wait to try out some of the bars and clubs once I move to Leeds.
I regularly received emails about CSR activities which the company encourages employees to get involved in. There are also numerous sports clubs. The firm has networks for groups such as women, LGBT etc. I attended a Women's Network meeting and it was interesting to see what type of activities they coordinate.
