The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. I was given exposure to a broad range of areas within the bank I learnt a lot of valuable skills that will prove integral to any future career in any industry.
I felt as valued as any permanent employee within my team. Similarly when I shadowed in other departments and met people from different teams I never felt out of place and was always made to feel welcome.
I was given a good level of support by my immediate supervisor and also by several of the senior managers who helped to run the internship programme. If there was an issue or something to be improved or I felt a certain piece of work required more training they were more than happy to help out.
My workload varied greatly each week. Some weeks when many people were on holiday I had less work to do as most work was project related. Other weeks I was rather busy and had enough work to keep me occupied throughout the day. I used times when I wasn't as busy to visit and learn about other areas of the bank which is something that is encouraged throughout the internship. Similarly if you don't feel that you have enough work, other desks will happily help you out and provide you with some work.
I feel like I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was given the opportunity to organise and lead several meetings with more senior members of the bank which gave me great exposure and experience. At times I would have liked to have been given more responsibility however there are naturally limits to the amount of responsibility a summer intern can be given.
The technical knowledge I developed through project related work isn't particularly useful for my degree. The knowledge and skills developed through general financial markets training run by HR during the first week and throughout the internship is very useful for my degree (Economics) and is knowledge that I can take with me throughout my career. Similarly technical and interpersonal skills that I have been able to develop throughout the internship will be useful throughout my career in any industry.
The Company
My office was rather quiet and most people simply got on with their work throughout the day. Several times I went to different floors and offices, such as the trading floor, which were much less quiet and had a consistent buzz of activity. I personally would have prefered to have been based on a floor/desk with more of an atmosphere, however this can be rectified by visiting/shadowing other desks.
The internship was very well organised and events were planned out far in advance. This enabled us to feel more embedded within the organisation and also more valued.
The firm were brilliant in delivering continuous training. There were weekly presentations by guest speakers as well as many presentations given by specialists within my business area. Senior managers were also keen to put on training sessions to enable us to develop soft skills and there were also several opportunities to have an informal lunch with senior managers to discuss their motivations during their career and any advice they would give. Senior managers made us feel like they wanted us to be successful and to return for the grad programme.

Employment prospects seem to be quite strong although I haven't yet discussed the possibility of future employment with the firm. From discussions with recent graduates it seems that if you do a good job on the internship and show a genuine interest in the job/business then there shouldn't be any reason why you wouldn't receive a job offer,
The Culture
The social scene was good and as well as the odd drinks put on by HR we did have our own drinks every week or so. I think the social scene is what you make of it and some people get more involved than others.
I lived at home so didn't incur any costs other than travel and lunch which although expensive are more than affordable given the salary. Again socialising isn't cheap however you are paid well and prices aren't really an issue.
The office is near to Shoreditch which has a great nightlife and there is lots to do all over London. In my opinion there are few places better in the world for nightlife.
There was a community project during the first week and beyond that community projects are offered, although as an intern these opportunities are more limited.
