The Role
I have worked for 4 years in the lower levels of IT before attending university and the amount of freedom offered by IBM to take on additional roles and responsibilities is second to none. Within IBM as an IT you are given a real role with real responsibilities, this is the real world and is worth doing as part of any degree. Also do not be afraid of trying something different as it is only for a year and you may learn something about yourself that you never knew.
From the start you will be accepted as an IBMer, this applies both to your close work colleagues as well as your fellow Industrial Trainees. The friendships you will develop in your year with IBM will be carried with you the rest of your life.
The level of support in my role has been excellent and is certainly required at the start when adjusting to the new roles. They do encourage you to try research and solve the problem yourself before asking for support/guidance but they are always there if you need them.
I worked in a sales role so the levels varied throughout the year, however if you are willing there are plenty of additional roles available to help out with from one of events such as helping present to a client to day to day tasks working with the business finance teams.
Understandably from the start you are given a lot of responsibility with the option to grow as the year progresses. My role started off with what I thought was a lot of responsibility but has managed to grow throughout the year as I have taken on additional roles such as the on-boarding of future Industrial Trainees
The skills I have acquired from IBM will be invaluable both in my degree and future, they have shown me that although I felt I was a purely technical person I do not have to be. The future is open as long as you are willing give it a try.
The Company
With the flexible desks there are less people working in the IBM offices these days but I have managed to sit with the other ITs in a group on our floor and its never dull.
Very well organized considering it is only for a year.
The different courses that I was sent on by my manager was excellent along with access to all the different venders training books (Cisco, Microsoft, etc) and internal IBM education.

The Culture
Excellent, the size of the Warwick site means that there is a large group of ITs but not too many that you loose track of people. There are plenty of events that we arranged from paintballing and go-karting to barbecues
Leamington and Warwick are not cheap but if you get in contact with the other industrial trainees and do a little planning you can cut the costs as we found when we managed to rent a 4 bed terrace house for £200 each and with no council tax and split the bills between four it is cheap. I highly encourage anyone on the IT scheme to get in contact with fellow ITs as living on your own can get expensive.
Leamington Spa has some good nights out but its not that busy, however, Birmingham is just up the road and that is a good night out.
Indeed, the IBM club generally arranges events for the larger IBM community and we as ITs arranged plenty of events.
