The Role
Really enjoyed interning at M&G Investments. It is a one of the top firms in the industry but not so big that you feel unappreciated. I was given many opportunities to value-add in a myriad of ways and my development was actively encouraged and looked after not just by human resource but by managers from different desks.
Great colleagues, looked out actively for my professional development. The corporate culture is such that every colleague seems to be very open to any questions, even if it may be basic. Non-judgemental environment, very collaborative.
Requested a weekly review instead of a monthly review and that was readily accepted by my manager. Feedback has always been honest and sincere.
M&G is very big on work-life balance, I was kept busy throughout the day but the day ends regularly around the 530 mark. Relatively speaking, the asset management industry is less hectic than say, investment banking. And relatively speaking, M&G is less keen on long hours than some of the other firms.
I had a good amount of responsibility in the sense that my output was regularly incorporated and distributed, either internally or externally, instead of being filed away and forgotten. But there was no one piece of work that only had my signature on it; it was always filtered carefully and signed off by more senior colleagues before being distributed.
The skills I developed are completely professional skills that are not taught in university. Very transferable and a good signposting of what is required in the industry.
The Company
Very collegiate and collaborative. For example, when the Wimbledon finals was on, people would gather around to chat for a few points etc. It's not a stuffy environment and the structure really is flat. Directors have been very open to meeting interns and it is really actively encouraged.
Pretty good, no big glaring gap.
I think at M&G the interns generally dictate their own personal training and development. If you were looking to learn something that might not be completely related to your job function, that door is always open so it really depends on how eager you are.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Firm is looking to expand in Europe and Asia so figured that there should be some good opportunities available.
The Culture
Pretty good, Friday drinks are a regular occurrence.
Decently priced food of above average quality provided in the canteen.
Plenty of pubs and bars around the area.
Yes. Interns actually had to complete a Micro-Tyco Fundraising challenge.
