The Role
Great team, fantastic exposure and useful insight from graduates within the bank
Very much so - however I feel that I got very lucky with my team; there were some (though few) interns who felt otherwise
I had a fantastic support system within my team, who I learn a great deal from. They were able to offer guidance but give me responsibility to run significant areas of work on my own, and also learn this way.
The first couple of weeks I was trying to get up to speed with what the team did and also spent time sorting out technology/systems. I was not busy enough in this time, but this is natural (easing in). After this I was given significant responsibility and was hence busy, but my team always supported me and were very understanding in terms of workload.
A lot - I was given very significant tasks to undertake, but importantly always had the support to make this exciting rather than scary.
In my degree studies it will help very little, other than keeping my mind active at a time where I would otherwise be sunning myself on a beach. Beyond university, it will help a great deal - definately the most valuable work experience that I have done to date.
The Company
Very relaxed, however this is largely because I was working on the Barclaycard floor, which is notoriously layed-back. There was however a definite working vibe - not quite intense working, but rather a dynamic and energetic working atmosphere.
Fairly well organised - intern events were very well organised and put in calender well in advance, my team regularly talked to me about ongoing pieces of work (this is team dependent), however IT systems took a while to set up.
Training days were fairly informative for thos who hadn't been on the springweek, but for thos who had been on the springweek it was very dull and mostly the same. Great exposure given to senior finance employees who you can learn from. Valuabe 'meet the directors' initiative. My team helped me learn all about what they do and how they do it (this is team dependent).
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - finance graduates seem to have a good work/life balance and also are sponsored for an accountancy qualification, which is very valuable.
The Culture
Fairly good - we attended a graduate/intern sponsored event, with interns outnumbering grads. Barclays very much encourage this, and so if you have an enthusiastic intake, then the social scene will be good. I regularly met interns for coffee/lunch/drinks.
Fairly high cost of living in Canary Wharf, however you are compensated accordingly.
Plenty of pubs around but if you want any more than that, you must go further afield.
Yeh loads - I played 11-a-side football and went to a rounders & drinks event as well as many other informal meets.
