The Role
Working in procurement gave me a great introduction to working in a large company. I was given meaningful tasks that actually added value to the business, and allowed me to see my work impact on the company.
Some days were quiet, but I was always able to ask for extra work if needed.
I was left to compete tasks on my own and required to present my findings to senior team members. There was a lot of space to use my own initiative. I was given ownership of one project and worked to drive a few others. I was also trusted to put together legal contracts.
I think as a history student this placement was invaluable in helping me adjust to a commercial role.
The Company
Although there was a large age gap between myself and most of my colleagues, I still enjoyed working with everyone. There were plenty of opportunities to 'network' e.g. 5-a-side football teams, charity projects, volunteering.
The initial information was sometimes contradictory - e.g. turning up on day 1 not knowing where I was actually living. Line managers were given a lot of responsibility for ensuring I had enough work, which was great for me but other interns were not as lucky.
Legal training, opportunities to travel to see other parts of the business, presentation training
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
End-of-placement presentation that pretty much guarantees a place on the 2 year grad scheme if it goes well.
The Culture
Accomodation provided by the company at no cost. There was a lot of stuff to do (e.g. Thorpe Park, TopGolf, 30mins from central London). Could easily become expensive but didn't have to be.
Pretty average. No real uni town nearby, Windsor was the only place to go out unless you could afford a ridiculously expensive night in somewhere like Clapham. Still good fun nothing special.
Played 5-a-side every Monday with colleagues; occassional team meal/drinks.
