The Role
I really enjoyed my internship as I was placed within a great team and have learnt a great deal in such a short space of time.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues and believe I did make a difference within the project we are working on. I also believe I was valued as I have been offered an extended contract.
I was given a great deal of support from my manager and other senior members of the team as was always able to reach them and felt comfortable to ask them questions even if they were basic.
I felt I was quite busy as have been working on a project with big deadlines but I enjoyed this as it meant that I always had something to do. My manager was also great as ensured that I didn't have too much on my workload.
I was given a fair bit of responsibility as I helped to manage a certain area of the project and was responsible for delegating pieces of work to other team members.
I have graduated so they will not help me with my degree studies but I know they will be extremely useful in my future career choices as I have learnt a great deal and developed my existing skills.
The Company
My office was great as although we are part of British Gas, the fact we are based in a small office meant that at times it felt as though I was working for a smaller company. As the office was small it meant that everyone knows each other and so the atmosphere is very friendly yet focused and you are able to get on with your workload.
I thought that my role was organised well but feel that more information could have been sent out prior to the internship starting as we didn't receive this until the induction.
I was always encouraged to learn and develop whether it be sitting with other team members or attending training sessions such as excel training. The graduate team put on the excel training and a presenting training which were both extremely useful.
They are very appealing as I understand that the graduate programme is a great scheme and people develop significantly within this. I also feel that British Gas & Centrica have a great deal to offer in terms of development due to the wide range of opportunities availabel. I've also been offered an extended 6 month contract so the employment prospects are great.
The Culture
I was the only intern in my office and so I did not get to experience the social scene although I did attend a couple of the graduate social events.
Accommodation was provided which saved a great deal of money and was a definite bonus of the internship. I live in the area where I was based so was used to the prices of socialising.
There is nightlife in Southampton due to the universities being based there and it is a great night out, although I didn't experience it during my internship but have done so previously!
I didn't see these opportunities due to being based in a small office.
