The Role
The placement experience as a whole was very insightful. It allowed me to experience the nuances of a professional working environment. As with all jobs, diversity in the role could be an issue from time to time, leading to periods of boredom. There were company drinks once a month on average which was a perk of the job.
I was relied upon heavily and treated like an Executive rather than a placement student. Each individual is judged upon the merit of their own abilities. Those who prove through the quaity of their work that they are able, are given more responsibility and diverse tasks.
I had 5 managers over a period of 11 months. Managers consistently left the business as they were contractors. After 3 months, I was the most experienced member of staff working in my particular area. It was a challenge in bringing each new manager up to speed with the process and also giving them bedding in time. As a result, I often had to 'carry', new starters along and take on heavier workloads.
Often I was very busy. Work came in 2 hour spurts. 2 hours of work and 45 minutes of downtime on average. A very nice balance.
Due to the major turnover of managers, I was often responsible for production of major pieces of work.
Taught me how to remain professional in the workplace when dealing with 'problem' people, gave me an example of company culture, saw examples of macro and micro management, increased PC literacy, increase organisational and communicational skills and got paid a lovely sum in the process!
The Company
Mellow, work orientated, low buzz of noise in the background. Mainly just put your headphones in and get on with the work. Birthdays were celebrated in the oasis where everyone gathered for cake for 5 minutes to wish the person happy birthday.
Placement co ordinator changed half way through the year. The new placement co ordinator never met us once. We were assigned to departments based upon the answers we gave in the interview stage. We were then assigned to jobs without taking into consideration our preferences. Placement students are treated as executives. There is no tailored 'Scheme' in place to enhance individual skill sets or to give you targets.
Online courses are available but chances are that you wont have enough time within your day to do them as you will be busy with other things.
