The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the placement at Allianz it is a great place to work everyone is as friendly and welcoming as can be and there are opportunities to gain exposure to other areas of the business if that is what you desire. I was lucky enough to go on a survey in London to see how risks are assessed, a broker visit to see some client interaction and even spend a day at head office in the Finance department as I am interested in that graduate scheme.
From day one I felt valued by the team as I was able to get stuck into some very interesting projects which inevitably caused the need to collaborate with everyone who was more than happy to take time out of their day to talk to me and help push my projects along.
Some of my projects set were very ambiguous however I enjoyed this as it allowed me to innovate and use my initiative and make the project my own, but if I ever required help my managers and team around me were extremely supportive.
In the first couple of days I was just learning about the insurance industry but soon after I was getting set project after project which were all due on my last day this was a little overwhelming at first but I just prioritised my time and I was busy on a daily basis but not inundated with work, which was really nice as it caused the days to go by quickly and it meant I wasn't stuck doing any small minor jobs like filing.
I was given as much responsibility on my projects as you could get as once I had been given the brief I was able to go away on my own and get to work on it. It was also nice that some of the projects I did could have an impact on the business as one project was for the branch manager whom is planning on modelling it to the regional team in order to gain extra resources.
The skills I have developed will be exceptionally helpful with regards to my degree as in terms of presentation skills (which I had to do in front of the whole management team) so that should make all presentations I get at University look relatively easy and just general business acumen will help me to think logically about the topics in a real life context
The Company
General atmosphere of the office was very quite sometimes but does liven up and if you want to have a chat with someone its not frowned upon and everyone is up for a laugh. So overall the atmosphere of the office is good!
Internship was really well organised the HR team had a schedule of what we will be doing across the internship in terms of meeting up with other inters, having a careers fair just for the interns to see what the graduate schemes are like at Allianz. Also my manager was exceptional at organising my time over the internship with regards to what work I was given.
Brilliant! I really wasn't expecting to be invested in at all but they allowed me to go on the Broker visit, survey in London, and to go to head office to see what the Finance Division is like as that is what interested me after the careers fair. I really wasn't expecting to be able to do anything like this so it was a great surprise.
Company Parties/Events
Really good, as I have said earlier they hosted a careers fair just for the interns to show what they have to offer and they really want to get as many interns as possible on to the Graduate Scheme. So hopefully I will be coming back in the future.
The Culture
Yes really good although I was the only intern in the office the graduates were really fun to go out with and even the whole office as I was their for a colleagues retirement which got everyone out.
Accommodation was relatively cheap I was paying £400 a month renting a room in the centre of town in a really nice area. And there are lots of bars, pubs and all the essentials like that so its a really good place to socialise.
The nightlife in Maidstone itself isn't the best, however it is close to other places like Canterbury which is a lot better.
Yes there were CII events all paid for by the CII where you can network with brokers and other professionals in the insurance industry, although most of the people there were from Allianz but it was good to go out with people from work.
