The Role
I strongly enjoyed my summer internship at BDO. I was given a lot of real responsibility from the start and received a lot of support and training along the way. It included some nights in Birmingham and in London and was overall a very enjoyable experience.
One of the best parts of the internship were the people that I worked with. I received a lot of help and support from my colleagues and everybody was willing to help. They were also a pleasure to work with and it definitely made the job a lot better.
At the start of the internship, I had to set goals with my counselling manager and these were reviewed at the end. Management were always willing to help when needed, but the majority of help I asked for was from the trainees.
BDO put a lot of effort in to ensure that I received a lot of client exposure and spent a lot of the internship on site. There were a couple of days in the office, but even then there would always be other work that I could help out with.
I was given real responsibility from day 1. My work was always reviewed and I received a lot of help and guidance, and I was trusted to complete workbooks by myself.
It helps to put a lot of the knowledge I have gained from my studies into a practical context, which makes accountancy a lot easier to understand.
The Company
There was definitely a 'family' feel in my office, where everyone was very kind and welcoming. I worked with some people who were great fun and it made the job a lot more enjoyable. People would always be willing to help and check up on me to see how I was doing.
It was very organised - we had training in Birmingham for four days with all the BDO summer interns, which included dinner, drinks and other fun activities. We also wrapped up the internship in London with two days there.
BDO invested quite a lot and tried to ensure I got the most out of my internship as possible.
Company Parties/Events
Definitely very strong as I got on really well with the people I worked with and BDO really stands out as a fun but professional firm to work for.
The Culture
Everyone got on really well together and we spent a lot of time together when in Birmingham and in London, which included dinner and drinks.
All costs were relatively average.
Lots of people there who are of similar age.
