The Role
I really enjoyed working for BDO and it was a pleasure to be a part of the Nottingham audit team. Everyone was really friendly and helpful and I looked forward to coming to the office. However, I didn't get as much client exposure as I was expecting, and spent a lot of time in the office doing odd jobs, so I didn't feel like I was properly part of the audit process.
Nearly everyone in the office was lovely and made a real effort to make us feel involved, and to help us whenever we were struggling.
Everyone was really helpful, and anytime I asked for help I was given it straight away. My counselling manager was amazing, huge thank you to him! However, I rarely saw my buddy and she wasn't very talkative when I did see her!
There wasn't really enough work for two Summer Interns AND a Summer School intern sometimes. A few times we had to wait for people to dig something out for us to do.
We did a lot of work independently, but it was all checked over. I felt like I was helping people with work rather than doing work of my own, but with so little training I wasn't really expecting much else!
I feel like I'm comfortable with financial statements: how they work and what it all means. I think this is going to be quite useful - not many people my age have this knowledge! I've also gained a lot of communication skills by talking to people at all different levels.
The Company
The atmosphere was great! Everything was very relaxed and everyone was clearly trusted to get on and do their work without anything being enforced. It made for a great work environment and a productive day at work.
There wasn't really any work lined up for us when we arrived in the office - nothing was planned in advance. Our two days in London at the end felt like a bit of an afterthought - there wasn't anything arranged for Thursday during the day - it's almost impossible to fundraise in London with a week's notice! It would have been better if there was even just some things suggested, or some licences arranged for us to be able to collect money on the street or to busk.
We had four days training in Birmingham, which was okay! Could have done with a proper Excel refresher though, and some of the APT stuff was rushed over.
National Travel
Apparently 80% of people doing the interest get job offers - so pretty good!
The Culture
The nights in Birmingham and London were good fun and a great opportunity to mingle
I was living at home, so that was fine! The one night out I had in Nottingham was pretty cheap though
Good, although the office don't really go out much!
I wasn't even invited to the football tournament!
