The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. I was able to do a wide variety of work within audit and work with some really great people. I was able to get a really good insight into the office, the company, and audit itself.
My colleagues in the Nottingham office were great. Everyone was really friendly and approachable. Nothing was ever to much trouble and there were always people around to answer my questions.
Whenever support and guidance was needed there was always someone to help me. My manager was brilliant and always had time for me. However, each person is allocated a 'buddy' to help us if needed. I had little communication with my buddy, but it didn't really matter as there was always other people happy to help.
In general, it was a good balance and I felt I had the right amount of work. There were a few times where there was little work to do. However, this varies depending on when in the year the placement is as there are both busy and quiet periods.
This increased as the internship went on. When at a client's, I had a lot of responsibility and spent a lot of time speaking to various clients and was heavily involved in planning. In the office, there was some responsibility given as the are happy for you to perform many different tasks. Every thing anyone does gets reviewed anyway so I was able to experience quite a variation of tasks.
The skills and training will be very useful when I further my career in auditing. In my degree, they have limited application past obvious skills such as time keeping and focus.
The Company
Very relaxed. Everyone was very friendly which created a nice working environment.
Everything was planned. We spent a week in Birmingham at the start and two days in London at the end. Everything ran smoothly both at these locations and in the office.
We had a weeks training in Birmingham at the start. We were also able to access training courses from our laptops. A lot of time and money was invested in us by both student recruitment and individuals in the office.

The Culture
Yes, we went out once as an office and all interns went out each night for a week In Birmingham and also in London. Each night in Birmingham and London, events were put on by BDO with free alcohol and food. Club nights also followed so there was a good social scene.
I stayed in my student house so there was no extra cost to me. Nottingham city centre is reasonably priced.
We only went out once as an office but it was a great night. We visited many different bars.
There was the chance to do a 10k run as part of BDO, attend a summer BBQ and a curry night. There was also a BDO national football tournament in Cardiff I competed in.
