The Role
The internship on the whole was great - met some great people and had invaluable experiences
The internship group were all very friendly and the majority of people in the office were helpful and supportive. There were one or two that you could tell didn't really want you to be there.
I was given little to zero support from my counselling manager, who distanced himself from me and passed me off onto different people when I asked him a question. My 'buddy' was very supportive along with other seniors in the team. The overriding ignorance of my manager put a dampener on an otherwise supportive group of people.
When I was with a client, I was kept very busy - having an active role in the audit team. In the office I was not always so busy. Due to the timing of the internship (quieter period for audit), there was little to no work on some days which was frustrating.
On site with a client, I was given a lot of responsibility to work independently and ask the client for any information that I needed. As the team were limited to the amount of time they have on site, I had the responsibility to be supportive and a value adding member rather than being passive.
Not a great deal. Studying a degree is very different to being thrown in at the deep end with a client. I found it difficult, at first, to talk to the client with confidence - not something that can be taught.
The Company
Fantastic. The audit team was made up of people not too older than myself so there was always a good laugh.
Generally terrible. The first week in Birmingham was great - despite sitting in a restaurant, all starving to death, listening to a presentation until 9pm. The lunch they had catered for us that day had only left us with half a sandwich each. The day I arrived at my regional office I was told that I was on site the following week, but a 2 hour commute away. I have been told since that if this was the case for anyone else, it would have been an 'away job' and Id have been put up in a hotel for the week. So I could help feeling a little hard done by. Again, in the office - work was just thrown on my desk whenever there was some and I was booked in on jobs that didn't exist or managers didn't know I was on - so when emailing them about what I was doing, I was left feeling a bit silly. And then in the final 2 days in London, there was a CSR day organised initially. This did not happen, but instead we were told to work on our presentations for the following day and fundraise in the afternoon - which given less than 2 weeks notice was near on impossible.
The company have spent a fortune on the internship. We all received a first week of basic training which was very helpful.
