The Role
Very useful in providing an insight into audit. On-site audit completed for two weeks of placement was very enjoyable as was the office work. However I feel it could have been improved by reducing the office work and providing more on-site experience.
I was trusted with roles and thanked for efforts made. All colleagues were appreciative of your efforts to support their work no matter how seemingly small the task given was. The buddy system could have been improved my giving you a buddy that you work regularly on a job with, with my experience I did not feel that I had the opportunity to build a good relationship with my buddy.
I had regular guidance by the managers on the jobs I was working, felt comfortable to ask any questions and these were well received and answered.
Varied throughout the internship, when attending on-site audits I was busy throughout the day but on some occasions in office there were times when I was left without a role to complete, this was more evident towards the end of the internship.
In office tasks, although supportive to the team and assists in ensuring the overall timely completion of jobs, were trivial and at some points laborious. The responsibility levels increased to independent work with the on-site audit - it was a shame that there was not more time to experience these on-site experiences.
Time management and organisational skills will definitely be transferrable skills to my university completion and in the future. The first week of intense accounting training will be very beneficial for an audit graduate role.
The Company
A young lively office with very quiet periods where people concentrated on work. At regular intervals, people were happy to engage in conversation and the colleagues seemed to enjoy their roles.
To begin, the placement seemed very organised and structured with a CSR task to combine with regular work. Having said this, the final weeks arrangements where all interns returned to the London office was unorganised. Expecting a CSR day on the penultimate day we were instead left to 'raise as much money as possible' with no further instruction or guidance for five hours in London. Without street charity permits or any initial ideas and the capital we had raised up to that point taken away and not provided (so we were unable to buy items to then sell) this was very difficult. The lack of structure to this somewhat ruined the relatively good organisation up to that point.
Good training week provided in Birmingham before deployment to our regional offices which gave us a good understanding of the role and any technical knowledge required.

On the basis that graduates would undertake work with further responsibility, I feel BDO would be a good company to work for.
The Culture
At the Birmingham training and London final days the social scene was good.
Not expensive.
Not sure.
Lots of opportunities to attend social activities as arranged by the office, including 5-a-side football and a football tournament with other offices.
