The Role
Overall, TfL is a great place to work. I moved departments 3 times (4 months each), I was exposed to the real working life of TfL. I learnt a lot in such a short space of time.
Like all organisations, you get a mixture of people, some you get on with and some not so much. However, I was luckly enough to be place in great teams, with very hardworking and professional people. I had a lot of support from my co-workers and they often put up with all my questions. They allowed me to get fully invovled in the projects.
When you start TfL you are allocated a 'Sponsor', who is a senior manager. I frequently had meetings with my Sponser to keep him updated on my progess and any difficulties. He was very supportive and a great help when it came to finding the next departments I should move on to. He allowed me to great amounts of flexibility when choosing my next move within TfL. Each rotational placement you have, you have a new line/placement manager. 2/3 of mine were great, very helpful and made sure I had been set on projects and ensured I settled well into the team.
Some days, very. Other days not so much. Like all organisations you get your high and low periods. As an Intern/Graduate you have a lot of flexiblity in being able to ask for more work from your team or another team in your department (as long as you clear it with your direct line manager). Also as an Graduate/Intern you can get invovled in alot of 'non' placement based activities to keep you busy, from forums to site visits and lots of training.
My first placement, I had basic responsibilties, as I was still attempting to understand everything around me. 3 months in and I was leading my own procurement with support from a procurement manager. My second placement, I had a lot more responsibility, I was working on gathering requirements for a re-let. I was in charge of facilitating meetings between Subject Matter Experts and Commercial and recording all changes and additions to the new contract. My third placement, I became a lot more confident in sharing my own thoughts on issues with a project. I attended meetings with very senior members of staff and have to share information and details with them.
The skills I have learnt at TfL will help me tremendously in my future. The knowledge I have gained about the public sector industry and procurement will help me when applying for jobs/graduate schemes. There are many skills that will help practically when completeing my degree, such as using excel and visio or understanding how to search the internet for information I need.
The Company
I worked in three different offices and the atmosphere was good. When it was busy, they were very focused and at less busy times it was more sociable.
The overall work placement was well organised but allowed for me to choose which departments I joined next. HR & your Sponsor organise the initial department/team you join. But after that its down to you to meet with people from other departments and select your next placements. I didn't need the help of HR much , so I canot comment on how useful and organised they were in the placement set up.
Even though I was on the work placement, I was able to do just as much training as the graduates on my scheme. Except the training/courses that are completed over 2/3 year period.
