The Role
Very interesting audit and tax tasks. Gaining responsibilities and going on clients' sites right after training day. Learning different terms and accounting treatments everyday.
Most staff took the initiative to introduce themselves to me and tried to involve me in many company social events, and also encouraged me to ask questions.
Colleagues answered my questions patiently in a very detailed way, with explanations to every calculation steps and regulation changes. Managers would review my work and gave me explanations if any mistakes were made, showing a no-blame culture.
I would be working on several cases daily for Tax Returns, and I could always ask for more responsibilities after I have completed my assigned work. If I needed more time on a certain client, I would also have the flexibility to do so.
I was responsible for revenue testing and reviewing board minutes on the second day of working already being at a client's site. I also held responsibilities for my own tax returns work and I was able to gain access to most electronic and physical documents to aid my calculations.
I developed interpersonal skills through introductions and interaction with new people which could help myself in degree studies and beyond in future team-working activities and bond with other members more quickly. I have also strengthened my skill of paying attention to details which allow me to make less errors in the future. The specific trainings for respect and ethics, IT and audit would definitely improve my personal development, as well as improving my professional experience if I continue working in the accounting industry.
The Company
Happy. All staff seemed cheerful and a lot of interaction between staff was evident. Subordinates and managers would chat like friends, yet could also be serious in work.
I was clearly told that I would be working on tax for a week and on audit in the following week. Yet, it would have been better if I knew which clients I would be working for on each day in advance.
The firm has spent a lot of resources to help us develop our skills, in terms of IT, Health and Safety, Audit, Respect and Inclusion among staff and Ethics in working at professional firms. Many colleagues were also willing to help with any enquiries with enthusiasm.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I would love to stay with this firm. I could see that the process of becoming a professional qualified accountant is clear and I am confident that I will receive a lot of support from the firm if required.
The Culture
There are three placement students in total, including myself, and we get along very well. We went up to each other from time to time to update our working plans and progress.
Typical UK standard cost of living.
A wide range of pubs and clubs available.
Shopping, cinemas, museums, bowling, galleries, seaside...a lot of activities!
