The Role
I very much enjoyed my placement year. Although there were some aspects I struggled with, overall I feel I have gained extensive experience of both marketing and working in the office environment
Many people had uses and relied on the work I was doing which made me feel like I had a purpose for being in the office
My supervisor was extremely involved in my work and would make himself available to offer help any time I asked for it. However, I was aware that my time on placement would benefit me greatly in the future so I tended to try and work things out for myself if I was stuck and only asked for help if I really needed it. It was nice to know that he was there if need be though.
I started off the year not very busy. By the end of the placement I had alot of work on which I sometimes struggled to prioritise. It seemed as if I would finish one thing and someone would ask me to do another. However, it has given me good experience of prioritising work for the future.
I was responsible for certain things that if I didnt complete or didn't do correctly then there would have been issues. I think the certain jobs I had to do had been chosen carefully to minimise any potential damage I might cause if I did something wrong. There were jobs I did where there was a lot of responsibility involved and alot of choices I had to make on my own
There are skills I have learned on placement which I know I will take further. These include practical marketing knowlegde, different courses I have completed, working with people, prioritsing workload effectively and making important decisions on my own
The Company
The office was quite small and alot of the staff were not in every day. Everyone was very nice and friendly though
I was the only placement student in the office and at first there wasn't much for me to do. At the start of my placement year my job roll was restructured. This gave me a new mentor who was permanently based in the Glasgow office and through this I ended up with a more organised role
I was given the opportunity to do various online courses. The only one which was recognixed outside the company was Lean 6 Sigma
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
I have been offered the chance to sign up to a talent pool where ex placement students are offered the chance to apply for jobs before they are offered to the wider public
The Culture
N/A - no other students at my placement
I stayed at home while on placement so cost of livng and socialising remained the same. Glasgow is not an expensive city.
Glasgow has a great nightlife with lots of clubs and bars open every night of the week
There were days and nights out organised within the office and I made friends who I saw outside of work
