The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I was never pushed too far out of my comfort zone, and was given tasks which were aligned with my own progress which meant I felt more confident and comfortable undertaking the tasks I was given. There was also always something going on, from sport competitions to BBQ's there was never a long day.
Everyone fully appreciated everything I did for them, especially since I was working over peak periods.
The support I received from my line managers was amazing. Any issues at work, or even personal problems, they always made time to sit and discuss to make sure I was happy at work and performing the best of my ability.
For the majority of the time I always had a large task in order to keep me busy. However like any job there was the odd day where there wasn't much for me to do, more so when I started in different departments as there needed to be someone with the time to talk me through what I needed to do.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility to make sure the tasks I was doing were accurate and complete in a reasonable amount of time, which did keep me motivated. However there was a limitation to the amount of responsibility I could hold as the majority of tasks had to be checked by a high grade underwriter anyway.
Having insight into the insurance industry and getting involved in the underwriting process broadened my commercial awareness significantly. Having the opportunity to attend webinars, meetings and presentations which counted towards the underwriters' chartership was a great opportunity as it developed my knowledge base of insurance even further.
The Company
It mostly depended on how busy the team was and which department I was in. If everyone was extremely busy it was generally quiet, but everyone was always chatty and up for a laugh.
From day one there was structure to the internship. We all had induction at Horsley where we all got to meet each other before we started at our offices. Then half way through we met up there for a second time where we got to hear about the graduate schemes on offer. On our final day we went again where we delivered presentations on our experiences.
As previously mentioned I got a lot of opportunities to attend a lot of training sessions and had various different meetings tracking my development.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Very appealing. All underwriters work towards professional qualifications and there is a great work life balance.
The Culture
Again it depended what department I was in, but there was a lot of times people had gone out outside of work hours which included graduates and colleagues.
It was just about average and quite affordable.
The nightlife is good as it is in a city centre.
Not sure as I travelled into work, however I would think there would be plenty to do in the local area.
