The Role
While there were challenges and days that were tough, overall the internship was very enjoyable. Everyone at UBS was very welcoming, and the program is designed to have lots of events and interesting training.
For the first week or two I was not very helpful, but as I learnt and was able to start contributing, I was immediately given tasks and responsiblity. I felt that trust was placed in me, and I was valued by my team.
Everyone was helpful and supportive - if I reached out I was immediately supported. I was worried , as my line manager was going away for 3 weeks in the middle of my internship, but he made sure that the rest of the team was there to set me tasks and answer my questions while he was gone.
At first, I had little to do as I was still learning. After the initial period, I was the perfect level of busy - my days were full and exciting, and I was never bored, however I weas never overworked or stressed. Part of this is due to the fact that my team would only set mye new tasks once I had continued the ones I was working on, and if I felt bored I could always ask people for things to do.
Obviously, an intern can only be given a certain amount of responsiblity. While I was tasked with small tasks, I had read-only access to most systems and mostly worked on analysing results, where I could do no damage. It was enough responsibility that I did not feel nervous, and maybe a little more responsibility would be welcome.
The training in the first week was invaluable - the Excel work and the work on personal development. Additionally, over my internship I feel I learnt a huge amount about the financial world. I also learnt a lot about office life, communication, and other skills I will use throughout my career.
The Company
Generally good - everyone was very friendly and there were aways birthday treats or lunches with my team.
Extremely well organised, from the training to the events. When I arrived some of my software (login, email account etc) had already been requested. Additionally, there was the mentor program and check-ins throughout the internship, all of which was very well organised.
There were constant learning opportunities - ops academy, weekly talks and week 1 traiing. As well, everyone I asked was more than happy to meet up with me, explain their role and allow me to shadow them. I felt that while I was there to contribute, I was allowed to spend a significant part of my time working on my own developmet; in fact my team constantly encouraged me to reach out and learn.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I would definitely return for a graduate placement. After my internship I feel that UBS is an excellent place to work. They value their employees and invest in their development, and there are lots of advancement opportunities. Additionally, they were extremely welcoming and as a firm have good values, with constant fundraising events and charity involvement which they encourage their employees to participate in.
The Culture
Among my colleagues in my team, they were busy and we went out for lunches but little else. Among the interns there was a large social scene. We had all of week 1 training together, as well as three organised events and weekly talks within the divisions. I feel that I have made some good friends and we socialise constantly outside of the internship.
Vry high - in order to live close enough the rent will be high. Additionally, going out for lunches and drinks will be expensive. However, the salary is enough to cover the living costs, even with an active social life.
Pretty good. There was always a place for after work drinks. these always ended by last train home though, as the interns generally needed to travel quite far.
There were loads of training opportunities and talks. Lots of charity events to get involved with.
