The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Barclays. I was always kept busy with tasks that actually added value to the organisation.
The culture at Barclays is fantastic. Everyone treats you as an equal, despite the junior level, and is always on hand to provide support and advice in any area you express an interest in.
You are given a large amount of responsibility; however, my manager was still very supportive if I had any questions. They would always put me in contact with someone who could help, if they themselves could not answer my questions completely.
Every day was packed with talks, meetings and meeting my objectives.
I was given a range of objectives that required contacting colleagues from all areas of the bank. The level of responsibility also comes with personal accountability, something I really enjoyed having as I could demonstrate my skills and ability.
My time management and organisational skills improved dramatically during my internship; given the breadth and depth of the tasks I was given. I will use these skills when I complete my third year at university, specifically in the dissertation. The networking element of the internship helped improve my people skills, which will really help in growing my network in the future.
The Company
Friendly and supportive. This is true of every area of the bank I encountered.
The internship was very well organised, with HR setting up a fantastic range of talks and meetings with very senior leaders within the bank.
Any of the training days you could get your hands on were made available for interns, allowing you to build extensive technical skills from people with great experience. These days were included in the internship.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Fantastic. Given the international nature of Barclays, there are jobs all over the world that can be accessedas part of the Barclays network.
The Culture
There were over 300 interns on the programme, all based in one location, consequently, there were plenty of opportunities to meet and socialise. Everyone was keen to interact with each other both inside and outside of work.
London prices are reasonably high when compared with my home county of Yorkshire, however, the salary reflects this so you will be fine as long as you spend your money responsibility.
Living in London, it speaks for itself.
There were not that any opportunites for social events outside of work, as the vents that were put on outside of working hours were still based in the office.
