The Role
I have really enjoyed my experience at Barclays - I've learnt a lot and met some amazing & inspiring people
Considering I didn't know very much about banking, I have felt very valued by my colleagues and they have taught me a lot. Depsite my limited knowledge/ experience, they still trusted me with a lot of responsibilty and did their best to give me interesting work where I felt like I was actually contributing something.
Everyone has been so helpful, friendly and approachable - both juniors and seniors. Everyone has been very patient with all of my (silly) questions and have taken the time to explain things to me. The buddy scheme has also been really useful as it's been great to always have someone to turn to for advice.
To start with, naturally I didn't have much to do, though that rapidly changed! I was very busy 99% of the time, which was great in making me feel like I had made the most out of this internship.
Again, considering my limited knowledge/ experience, I was trusted with a lot of responsibilty, which was great in making me feel valued.
I have learnt so much over the last couple of months - how to act in a professional environment, technical skills, soft skills and how to network successfully, to name but a few. These have all been skills that are very much relevant in both my degree and future jobs.
The Company
Great - good, focused working atmosphere, but also a lot of fun with plenty of banter.
Excellent - very structured and plenty of events going on outside of the desk work.
Barclays has invested both time, money and plenty of resources in me. The training at the beginning was extremely useful (especially having come from a non-finance background), and there has been a lot of training since. The people that work here have been very patient and helpful, so have invested a lot of time in me by sharing their knowledge and expertise.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - there is a clear ladder to move up over the years, providing everyone with clear goals.
The Culture
It has been difficult to organise events amongst the interns as everyone works very different hours, however we've all got on very well and socialised when we can.
Being in London it has been very expensive - but worth it!
Really great - being in London there is always plenty going on.
Yes - lots of different internal networks holding events, plus sports. Given the hours of investment banking there wasn't ample time to do too much with my own friends though.
