The Role
I really enjoyed the internship, I felt the number of opportunities at Barclays where extensive and varied especially as I was on the PCB & Barclaycard internship. HR was supportive in helping you to get what you wanted out of the 9 weeks.
Everyone was extremely welcoming at the start, and after proving that I was confident and capable enough I was given significant responsibility within the team.
Two initial training days were put on for all the interns; these brought everyone from a non-finical background up to speed. After this you are trained and supported by your line manager, with whom you have weekly meetings. They set you objectives to complete during your internship and follow up on how you are going about the actions to complete them.
I would say this ranged throughout the internship. When multiple deadlines were coming up and the citizenship project was on at the same time I found myself busy, but this is nothing that could not be completed in reasonable working hours. Others periods of the internship I found myself asking for more work so that I could progress.
After the first few weeks I was given a lot of responsibility this ranged from data analysis for meetings that my manager was going to be attending, to actually presenting in the meetings myself. When my manager was away she let me project manage her ongoing actions, this lead to me working with senior individual in the company, who I would not normally get the opportunity to interact with. Additionally as I was working on an exciting new project in the bank, with a small team, therefore I was in the lucky position to be attending meetings and discussions with the investment senior management team.
The skills developed will help me to influence in a professional environment in the future. The general skills developed such as developing effective presentation and public speaking skills will be applicable in both further studies and beyond.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was really great; this is something that I would really say is one of the advantages to working at Barclays. Everyone in the office is extremely approachable and is willing to explain or assist in any queries you have. There is the option to spend days in offer department for example I spent a day in the Corporate bank learning about their products and teams.
This was the first time there was a PCB & Barclaycard internship and therefore some of the paperwork such as the contract came through quite late in the initial stages before the internship. Once we arrived everything was extremely seamlessly run, only the citizenship project was something I felt could have been implemented better.
The firm provided online training and two days worth of initial training at the start.

Company Parties/Events
The number of interns taken on from the scheme is high, and the HR team are very supportive in helping you prepare your CV and applying to internal positions.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene amongst interns. Friday evening always consisted of intern drinks and there were also opportunities to do activities during the week.
Ping pong competition and volley ball matches, as well as other opportunities such as football and quiz's.
